A small #bird just landed on my head while I was resting on a #bench :D

Hopped around a little, cleaned its wing and then pecked at my hair a bit until giving up and moving on.

I obviously did not move, so I don't know what type of bird it was. If I had to guess, it was probably a #tit as only other small birds common here are #nuthatch​es and I don't think they'd be so brazen. No #sparrow​s here surprisingly. *Could* have been a #robin now that I think about it?

From one of my outings (which were few and far between) earlier this year: One of a pair of Nuthatches who came to claim their share of the Sunflower seeds at Brandon Marsh. The background colour, complementing the bird’s chest and belly, is provided by a sunlit reedbed in the near distance.

Finally, a video capture of the nuthatch living in our garden. There's a pair of them, they're quite territorial - no other nuthatches allowed. They don't mind any other birds, though.

We've enjoyed the antics of the White Breasted Nuthatches for years. But I'd never seen pygmy nuthatches. Until this year, and now we have two. They're tiny, very brave, and “peep” like a songbird. (The White Breasted almost honk, like a goose.) And they've been infuriatingly difficult to get on camera. On two occasions they've been close enough to reach out and touch, and on neither of those occasions did I have a camera.

The White-breasted Nuthatch is normally territorial throughout the year, with pairs staying together. The male has to spend more time looking out for predators when he’s alone than while he’s with his mate. That’s the pattern for most birds, and one reason why birds spend so much time in flocks. But the female nuthatch has to put up with the male pushing her aside from foraging sites, so she spends more time looking around (for him) when he’s around than when she is alone.

Location: Hendrie Valley Trails, Royal Botanical Gardens

The North Bridle trail of the Hendrie Valley trails is a fantastic part of this lovely trail system. It doesn’t have the boardwalks of the other trails but we came across this perfectly lit section. The late fall colours glowed in the mid-day sun. In the same 10 meters we saw these Nuthatches, a Downy woodpecker, Black-capped Chickadees, and of course there was an Eastern Chipmunk. Sadly I assume this is because people continue to feed the wildlife contrary to all the warnings but I am so happy to have had the chance to get these shots.
