In today’s installment of classic productions everyone on earth except me has seen—I saw a performance of The #Nutcracker for the first time. Sure, I was familiar with many of the songs but never actually watched it and didn’t know the story.

Realized how quite simple the core story is: family Christmas party; some bratty kids; broken nutcracker gift is repaired; girl dreams of it; helps it defeat a bunch of mice and turn into a prince; and gets a feast and a long song-and-dance show as thanks.

I was trying to think outside the box and do a non-traditional nutcracker.

It's December--Nutcracker season! So many Nutcrackers, each with a different take, from classic Balanchine ballet to Afro-Brazilian, to contemporary to tap. Tchaikovsky and Duke Ellington--everybody has a version.
