Dear #RStats experts, which tools and models do you recommend for #nowcasting univariate time series? In the past I used glmnet and lagged auxiliary time series, but there must be something less "artisanal". Thanks!

#Nowcasting is basically extrapolation based on clouds and other observations. Radars provide us high resolution, infrared images. Models are also used. Google data can be useful for #GDP #growth #nowcasting during expansion phases when information is lacking, after a pre-selection step. As soon as official macroeconomic information arrives, the marginal gain from Google data tends to vanish. During #recession phases, it seems that forecasters need the largest available information set to assess economic activity. … empirical results point to the importance of pre-selecting data before using it in nowcasting models.
