  1. For the first time, today's daily update on ppppppssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhh.xyz was posted fully automatically, courtesy of a `launchd` job I have added to my laptop. This should make future updates more reliably *daily* from now on. The job is set up to run at 06:00 America/Chicago time, or whenever I wake the machine up if it's hibernating at that hour #noiselife

  2. heard a paper wasp collecting fibers, *skritch skritch skritch*, except it was really loud so i went to investigate. turned out it was scraping on one of last year’s shallot stems that has dried up, and the hollow tube of it was acting like a natural resonator.

  3. The other thing I really like about this audio is that it’s just generated from code and math; in that sense it isn’t even a recording, just some data that an audio program and A/D converter can play back through a speaker as sound, but it isn’t reproducing some original signal in the analog domain. The digital file IS the original and I love that! #NoiseLife #Schizoid #Noise #cptsd

  4. I don't know whether anyone else will find this as helpful and just downright satisfying as I do, but I do so much I just wanted to share.

I can't turn up the posts now, but a few weeks ago I did a little thread about how for self-care, mindfulness, and grounding myself. I sometimes like to sit still while listening to some type of static noise on headphones. As I mentioned then, field recordings of waterfalls, rain, fountains, etc are nice for this -- and of course the streaming services and internet at large have no shortage of tracks featuring white noise, along with pink noise, and a variety of other colors.

I am particularly fond of pink noise. I just think it sounds pleasing, plus its 1/f power law distribution of amplitude to frequency is reflected in many natural processes, and I guess I somewhat superstitiously believe that makes it special and more healing to listen to.

In any case, one of the things that's weird though about listening to pink noise sources online though is that they tend to all sound a little different, whereas like I just said I want that power law magic and that comes from a very specific technical thing. So there's this nagging doubt that I don't know what I'm getting.

So I came up with a Python script that generates nine minutes and twenty-seven seconds of pink noise using the voss-mccartney algorithm. (It actually takes an argument to set the time, but I like 09:27 for again personal superstious numerological reasons.)

I also wanted a wide sense of the stereo image for this, so I made it generate enough data for nine mono tracks, which are then each panned to end up evenly distributed in stereo, using equal-power panning for constant perceived loudness across the stereo field.

The results are printed to AIFF on disk, which I converted to flac and Apple lossless formats for uploading

So, here for the delectation of anyone who cares to download, is 9'27'' of the most unfiltered, mathematically accurate, and all over your head pink noise you're liable to find anywhere. I've tried it in some earbuds and it was fine, but for best results I recommend strapping on the big over ear headphones!

  6. Sure the lyrics are beyond and grim and nihilistic, but somehow -- I suppose in a Hesse-Steppenwolf sorta way -- I've always found the refrain of this song weirdly but *enormously* inspiring and uplifting. Like, the idea that I always have the option to destroy myself can itself serve as an incredibly powerful motive to push myself to be as *creative* as I can manage instead. It's like a little existentialist prayer: SET ME ON FIIIIIIRRRE!!!

  13. @c_reider yeah I get the impression that a lot of the core mastodon (before this great migration) was writers and visual artists that didn’t feel comfortable on twitter. Which is interesting. I am seeing a more of my #noiselife folks moving over too. So I am hopeful. I also hope to find new music folks. Does still feel like early days for all that

  14. @cinchel it’s weird how little #noiselife activity there is here, but music mastodon has blossomed massively just in the few months I’ve been active here, so maybe it’ll happen

  15. Doing some consolidation and was no longer intimidated by the procedure to create an alias and migrate accounts. Actually worked really well. Impressive. Now I can really focus on deeper engagement here and maybe later find a more comfortable instance, maybe a real #noiselife one. That would be cool. But for now I’ll actually try and post here like more regularly. Whee

  16. Maker, improviser of music. Saxophone, unrecognizable. Electronics, non-human empathy. Computer, antagonistic virtuosity. Leave behinder of successes. Offerer of lots in exchange for little. Beauty, should one be so generous. Curiosity: Films, philosophy, lit'trature. Just being in a book store. Enemy and occasional victim of nostalgia. Aimless walker. Tour van humorist. Dry land laconic. Lover of cities, dreamer of emptiness #musodon #experimentalmusic #noiselife #filmdon #philosodon
