Stopped by Marina Beach Park in Edmonds the other day, and witnessed a couple of neighbors having a pole-ite argument.
I'd originally headed there in hopes of getting some photos of the Orcas that had been seen nearby, but by the time I arrived they'd moved on. The eagle on the post was a worthy substitute, and the other birds coming over to complain in person about his presence made for some fun photo opportunities. Given the combination of things (Bald Eagle, Puget Sound, ferry, swimmer, Olympic Mountains) it was a Very Washington day for shooting. Which was pretty great.

One of the things I love about living in western Washington is the presence of mountains, with the Cascades to the east and the Olympics to the west...

The days are still getting shorter... but not for much longer.
Hang on to every scrap of light you can.

Back at the end of October I had the pleasure of working with No Refunds Productions once more, shooting the dress rehearsal for their most recent play "Sunset People".
As always, their shows are loads of goofy fun and I found myself smiling and laughing a lot while I was working. I've put together a gallery of photos in my portfolio section, which you can check out here: https://andrewflenniken.com/pt-portfolio/no-refunds-productions-sunset-people/

A few more from my trip to Mount Rainier National Park a couple of weeks ago.
(Cross-posted from my site, where you can view the additional photos: https://andrewflenniken.com/2025/10/28/october-28th-2025-sourcing-the-river/)
Since the road up to Sunrise was already closed I went to the White River campground instead. Most of it was already closed as well, but the day-use area wasn't and it's right next to the river which suited my purposes nicely. I wanted to get some shots of the riverbed receding off into the distance towards the mountain with the source of the river, the Emmons Glacier, visible.
Which I got! Please enjoy them. :)
I've also included a color version of one of last week's shots. I think it works equally well in color; it's just great in a different way.

Last week was all about color, and this week is all about black & white.
(Cross-posted from my site, where there's an additional photo: https://andrewflenniken.com/2025/10/24/october-24th-2025-two-from-tipsoo/)
I'm a fan of black & white photos of mountains, especially when the sky has some high wispy clouds to give it texture and interest, and Rainier really delivered. Couple that with white snow around the lake, dark trees, and delicious reflections of it all in the water and I was very much in my happy place.
I've got a couple more I want to share next week, so keep an eye out for them, probably Tuesday or Wednesday.

It’s been a couple of years since I made it down to Mount Rainier National Park, and I wanted to do so before they closed the highway on the east side for the winter. They’d already closed the road up to the Sunrise ranger station, sadly, as well as much of the White River campground, due to the government shutdown, but Chinook Pass was still open, so up I went.

It’s mostly pines out that way, so where there are pops of color they *really* pop. And I’m pretty sure those are larches in the photo of Tipsoo Lake with Yakima Peak rising up behind. Their crowns are going golden, at least.
I’ll post a few more from that trip next week!

The last week has been fairly quiet on the photography front, so I went looking through my library to find something to post that I hadn't shown yet. Which is when I realized I'd done a whole day trip out to the coast in April that I'd never written about!
This was another result of a migration alert on BirdCast, which I mentioned in a prior post. I have an alert set for the Aberdeen / Grays Harbor area, and when it pinged in late April I decided to head down and see what kind of shots I could get.

Spring is definitely springing here in the Seattle area, with new growth everywhere. Cherry trees mostly peaked a week or so ago, but I managed to get some shots of them then, at the University of Washington quad, while doing a portrait shoot. There were *so many* people there that day!

Lower to the ground ferns are starting to rise up, showing their fiddle-head phase. I have fond memories of going "fiddle-heading" when I was young, picking the young shoots of edible ferns while they were still tightly coiled, and seeing one makes Spring feel Very Real to me. :) Maybe I'll get out and pick some when the season has started reaching the higher elevations in the Cascades.

A friend reached out last week. She'd been feeling the need to get out of the house and was interested in going to the Holi celebration at Seattle Center on Saturday. Would I like to go too?
I very much did. I've been going through a rough patch lately, and getting out of the house to attend something lively and colorful felt like a great plan. So I said yes.
Holi celebrations happen here every year in mid March, and it's a Hindu celebration of spring, love, forgiveness, and the triumph of good over evil. I was aware of the Redmond event, but hadn't ever made it out, and shouldn't have been surprised that there was another in Seattle Center. There's a whole slate of cultural events there throughout the year, and the few I've managed to get to have always been great.
My friend and I met at the Armoury, had the requisite caffeine, catching up, and lunch, and then wandered into the courtyard next door. There was a DJ, loud, lively music, dancing, and color. So much color!
I'm glad I went. I think we could all use some celebrating the triumph of good over evil right about now.
