Today is Memorial Day in the US, the unofficial first day of summer and a day off from work for lots of folks.
I'll admit, summer is my least favorite season. I'm definitely more of an autumn guy! That said, I live somewhere I can tolerate (and even enjoy) Summer, and I'll happily get my vitamin D via the sun for a few months rather than supplementing.
Late spring and early summer also means cottonwood seeds everywhere, like little snowdrifts, and my favorite flower, the California Poppy, is popping up everywhere.
So there's lots to smile about, I think, which we all need. Now probably more than most years. What are you looking forward to, and what's bringing a smile to your face?

Stopped by Marina Beach Park in Edmonds the other day, and witnessed a couple of neighbors having a pole-ite argument.
I'd originally headed there in hopes of getting some photos of the Orcas that had been seen nearby, but by the time I arrived they'd moved on. The eagle on the post was a worthy substitute, and the other birds coming over to complain in person about his presence made for some fun photo opportunities. Given the combination of things (Bald Eagle, Puget Sound, ferry, swimmer, Olympic Mountains) it was a Very Washington day for shooting. Which was pretty great.

(Cross-posted from my site, where there are a couple of other Spring photos to see: https://andrewflenniken.com/2026/05/11/may-11th-2026-wisteria-memories/)
I smelled them before I saw them, and the scent alone transported me back thirty years.
It’s an odd thing, how something can become inextricably linked to a person in your memory. My grandmother didn’t have wisteria in her yard or garden in Maine when I was growing up, that I can remember. When my grandparents moved to South Carolina, after I had started college, their new house *did* have it. The trees the vines were climbing got removed (at the insistence of a neighbor, I believe, who worried they’d fall on *her* house), but Mimi kept the wisteria. She wound the vines together so they’d climb themselves, essentially creating wisteria bushes, and when they bloomed they were glorious.
So now this adult memory, rather than anything from childhood, is what I associate most with her. Seeing or smelling them takes me back to sitting on the porch, watching skinks dart along the railing, hearing the drone of cicadas, and admiring her wisteria.

It's spring, and the bumbles are out in force.
Wandered around the Bellevue Botanical Garden late in the day recently, enjoying the sun and seeing what I could point my macro lens at. Lots of pollinators (and in some instances, polin-ant-ors) doing their thing. Strands of spider web here and there, too, so you know they're out there doing their thing.

Another BirdCast migration alert in my email, another excursion to see if I could find any migrating wetland birds. The destination was Spencer Island and Union Slough.
While I did spot a large flock of waterfowl, they were on the other side of the chain-link fence separating the slough from the water treatment plant beside it. I guess the combination of retaining pond and the relative protection provided by the fence were more attractive than the tidal estuary right next door. Very unhelpful, though. For me. :P
Still, the day was gorgeous, the walk down the trail was pleasant, and I was well rewarded at the end. That large, weathered tree, growing next to the channel, with it's bare top pointing up to the wispy cloud-filled sky, demanded my attention. The Sentinel of the Slough.
I liked the black & white version so much I immediately added it as an option in my print store. :)

I'd noticed a Red-winged Blackbird repeatedly perching on this thin tree for a bit, and then flying away. It took a while, but I eventually managed to get a shot of it taking off. Patience paid off. :)

I've had the good fortune to catch some other birds in flight recently, so they're grouped (flocked?) together in today's post. These were taken both at my usual haunt, the Center for Urban Horticulture, and another favorite birding spot: Spencer Island. Happy Flyday!

Took a walk through the Center for Urban Horticulture again recently, and this Marsh Wren was simultaneously the smallest bird I saw and the *loudest*. The crows were the most numerous and, collectively, louder, but this little guy was punching way above his weight.

The rabbit, on the other hand, was completely silent and I would have missed it entirely if it hadn't moved.

I love walking and shooting in wetland areas. The wildlife you can see in them plays a significant role in that love, and the birds there are a significant part of the wildlife.

I took a walk through the Union Bay Natural Area at the Center for Urban Horticulture recently, and brought my long lens along 'just in case'. It's a good location for spotting birds of all sorts and, though we're not into migration season yet, I thought I might get lucky.
Friends, I think I did. :)

This pair of Bald Eagles were in the wetlands portion of the natural area, perched in two different trees near each other. Given the time of year and their difference in size, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a mated pair with a nest in the area somewhere. I hope to see them next time I'm there, and I'll be bringing that long (and heavy, oof) lens with me for sure.

Today is Lunar New Year and it is the year of the Fire Horse. I do not have any photos of horses *on* fire (good!), or made *of* fire (which would be cool), so can I interest you in a photo of horses made *with* fire?

Taken over a decade ago, this photo is of a steel sculpture called Grandfather Cuts Loose the Ponies, by artist David Govedare, and it is located at the top of a hill near Vantage, Washington, above the Columbia River. From the interstate, and the parking area at the foot of the hill, it looks like a line of horses running along the top of the ridge. A short hike will bring you up and gives you angles like this from which to admire them.

On Saturday I met some friends at the Conservatory in Seattle's Volunteer Park. It was a cool, dreary, gray winter day, with rain spitting down on and off, which made the warmth of the greenhouse all the more pleasant.

It had been a few years since I'd last visited, and I'd forgotten how serene the conservatory is on a day like that. If you live nearby, or have something similar in your area, it's a good break if winter gloom is getting you down.
I didn't get a shot outside, so I've included one I took in a different winter a few years ago, when it was snowing.

Despite having lived here for 13 years now, I only recently visited the Central Library in downtown Seattle for the first time. It is a fantastic building, architecturally, inside and out. It is also a wonderful library: so many places to sit and read or quietly work.
(Cross-posted from my site: https://andrewflenniken.com/2026/02/03/february-3rd-2026-unexpected-library-poetry/)
I explored from bottom to top and at the highest point, in a particularly quiet and secluded place where you can look all the way to the bottom of the atrium, I found poetry. You kind of expect to find poetry in a library, but not quite like this.
Who knows how long it will stay there. I'm sure someday it will be cleaned away but with this photo, at least, we'll remember it was there.

Lots of cold, bright mornings around here lately, which means I've been waking up to sights like this. Frost on the grass, spinning the sunlight into glistening fragments, like tiny glowing gems: sapphire, ruby, emerald.

Hard to see except at a low angle, but the window in my basement bedroom is low enough to the ground for it to happen. Always nice when I can get a good shot while still in my pajamas. :)

Sometimes what we think we see is actually something else. It's a matter of perspective.
Can you tell how that applies here? :)

One month past the solstice and the days are definitely feeling a little longer now. I'll be happier when sunset's after 5PM, though.

Starting off the year with some moody black & white photos which, given how the year has begun, feels appropriate.

I took these on New Year's Eve while walking through Seattle on my way to a party. I appreciated how the fog worked with the lights; completely obscuring those further away, while making those close by stand out. Maybe that's the takeaway for the times ahead. In the dark and fog the light closest to you, that you *can* see, matters even more.

The last day of 2025 is here.
Three years ago some friends of mine went out for trivia on a Monday night. Initially, they struck out. The place they'd chosen was packed by the time they arrived, no room for another team to join. Undeterred, a search was made for somewhere else hosting trivia that same evening.
They found The Waterwheel, the chillest dive bar ever, with a game excellently created and hosted by Leland Hirschman.

The days are still getting shorter... but not for much longer.
Hang on to every scrap of light you can.

Back at the end of October I had the pleasure of working with No Refunds Productions once more, shooting the dress rehearsal for their most recent play "Sunset People".
As always, their shows are loads of goofy fun and I found myself smiling and laughing a lot while I was working. I've put together a gallery of photos in my portfolio section, which you can check out here: https://andrewflenniken.com/pt-portfolio/no-refunds-productions-sunset-people/

The place I do trivia on Monday nights was very, very full yesterday. I try to get there about 45 minutes before the game starts, since that’s before the rest of the crowd arrives and there are still tables available. Not so this last time! I ended up getting a seat at the bar and my team played from there.
(Cross-posted from my site, where there's an additional photo: https://andrewflenniken.com/2025/11/25/november-25th-2025-it-was-a-busy-night-before-thanksgiving/)
This did put me next to the taps and, since it was a busy night, the glassware piled up at one point, which drew my eye. It also put me next to the team that brings their dog every week. 🙂
