"Nikole Hannah-Jones has entered the Jillian Michaels chat: ‘Without slavery, our nation would be unrecognizable to us’

Nikole Hannah-Jones challenges Jillian Michaels' recent remarks downplaying the full scope of slavery in American history.

After Michaels grossly downplayed the scope of slavery in America during a recent television appearance, Hannah-Jones responded in a lengthy video posted to Instagram on Monday, breaking down just how central slavery was to every facet of the nation’s rise.

'I could not let that viral CNN clip of Jillian Michaels stand,' the scholar said at the top of the nearly eight-minute video.

    (. . .)

In her video, the award-winning author countered that framing slavery around the small percentage of white households that directly enslaved people obscures the reality that the entire nation’s wealth was built on the institution.

    (. . .)

'All but one of the people on our cash currency engaged in African slavery,' she highlighted.

    (. . .)

She detailed how cotton picked by enslaved labor represented half of all U.S. exports, fueling the country’s banks, factories, and institutions.

    (. . .)

Her message was clear: Even if only a small minority of white Americans were literally enslavers, the system of slavery was the beating heart of the U.S. economy and a society that sent half the country to war with the other to protect it.

'The times are too serious for us to proliferate a simplistic, unsophisticated, and childish understanding of the history of slavery,' she concluded."

    #NikoleHannahJones The 1619 Project

  4. Five years ago, Nikole Hannah-Jones launched her "1619 Project," a series of essays in The New York Times that argued the practice of slavery is the true foundation of America. She won a Pulitzer prize and the project went on to become a magazine, book, documentary series and podcast. The backlash was also fierce. A bill was introduced to strip funds from school districts that taught the project. Then-President Trump established the 1776 Commission to support "patriotic education." Hannah-Jones spoke to Poynter about how the project came together, what she learned from it, and the criticism that unfolded.

You're right, "school choice" and vouchers are policies that support the right's ongoing battle against Brown v. Board (1954). So is school district secession.

And this seems like a good spot to share a great piece by Nikole Hannah-Jones (apologies for the paywall, don't know of a free place it's available)

  7. Rainy and cold here so it's the perfect time to watch some history. #BlackHistory IS #AmericanHistory

#Hulu has #The1619Project airing, an expansion on the Pulitzer prize winning #NikoleHannahJones original 1619 Project.

This series not only teaches the history but shows how this history affects this country to this very day.

Ms. Hannah-Jones lends her authenticity to this project by being the storyteller/host. I highly recommend it.

“Aside from Hannah-Jones, executive producers are Oprah Winfrey, Guy, Ross Williams, Kathleen Lingo and “1619 Project” editor Caitlin Roper.”
