My favorite moment in a movie theater is probably the first time I saw 2023's Eileen.
It was opening night of #NHFF 2023, so the Music Hall in Portsmouth was packed. The audience was on the edge of their seats the whole time. So when the big reveal occurred, the entire audience gasped (myself included). It was one of the loudest non-laughter reactions I've ever experienced. It was incredible.
It's still one of my favorite movies of that year, despite its overall lukewarn reception.

I attended the #NHFF this past weekend for the fourth time, watching 22 features over four days. Here are my thoughts, and the top films I saw!

Happy #LetterboxdFriday !
When I'm at #NHFF , I usually exclude films I've watched on Thursday, as they're mostly local shorts. But this year, I mostly caught foreign films, so they're included.
The biggest call out is Sound of Falling. First saw it last weekend, but yesterday affirmed it's a masterpiece, one of the best movies of the year.
I was also impressed by Harris Dickinson's first movie. Needs work, but shows promise.

The list of films that will be at #NHFF went live yesterday!
As always, it's a great balance of a few high profile films, a couple well-known directors (at least amongst film nerds), and mostly works and people I've never heard of. Which of course means TONS of opportunity for discovery.
At a glance, I'm most excited for It Was Just an Accident, Sirât, By Design, and Urchin.
Of course, that list will balloon once I research the unfamiliar titles. =)

My favorite film at my first #NHFF (in 2022) was Disfluency, a nuanced and poignant tale of a woman returning home from school after failing her final class, and her endeavor to not let it define her.
Despite playing festivals since 2021,. it struggled to find distribution.
Well, it finally landed on VOD yesterday. I just rewatched it, and it holds up! I highly recommend it.
Note that its central concern is trauma, how we deal with it, and how others in our lives deal with it.

I was at the New Hampshire Film Festival this past weekend in Portsmouth. So I put together a post highlighting my favorite of the 38 films and shorts I caught over its four days.
Enjoy!

Happy #LetterboxdFriday to all!
I'm at the #NHFF this week, but I'm intentionally omitting the short films I watched yesterday. I'll write and upload my full wrap-up post early next week, highlighting the best of the festival.
In the mean time, I finally finished Twin Peaks' original run, completed Ali Abbasi's filmography, and began my walk through my Shinya Tsukamoto box set.
It's been a good week, and is looking to be a phenomenal weekend!!!

It's fascinating that the middling movie year looks like it might carry over to #NHFF .
There aren't many feature-length movies I'm excited about. Plenty of solid looking ones, but I'm only hype about maybe 10 of the 40?
And unfortunately, they've scheduled a number as single showings at the same time. So I'm probably gonna skip the likes of Bob Trevino Likes It, Mistress Dispeller, and more.
At least I'll get to see my friend's short film, In His Léon-Bollée, on the big screen.

If I'm going to watch one movie directed by Andrea Arnold, which should it be?
I presume American Honey? Although Fish Tank also sounds compelling.
I have the chance to see Bird at #NHFF , but its one showing conflicts with another in which I'm interested, so I wanna gauge if I like her previous stuff.

A strange week of movie watching for #LetterboxdFriday .
This year, I plan to actually aim for horror movies during the season, mostly ones I own. I even put together a list to track it: https://boxd.it/yrZdm
Which showed me I have so many to watch, amongst other self-imposed obligations, that I'm starting now. XD So the next two Nightmare films will end my evening.
Of course, #NHFF being in the middle of the month will slow me down, but whatever.

@ADignorantium One of the most underrated movies of last year.
I got to see it with a crowd at #NHFF , and there were a few moments where you could feel or even hear their reaction to some of the key moments. It was magical.
And held up on a rewatch a few weeks later once it hit theaters.

I'm intending to go to more film festivals this year, since #nhff has been so awesome the past two years.
To that end, I just bought tickets to the #BostonUndergroundFilmFestival at The #Brattle next week! Super looking forward to it.

My full review for Eileen is up!
After loving it at #nhff , I caught it again in the theater, and it holds up just as well on a second watch.

Welcome to Friday!
It's been a good week. Not just in my movie watching, but also in, ya know, life. Caught up with a few friends, been doing a bunch of writing for the movies I saw at #nhff on Letterboxd, and finally back on tasks I find interesting at work.
And the weekend also looks to be good, albeit rainy. =)

As previously mentioned, I was at the New Hampshire Film Festival this past weekend. I watched an absurd amount of movies, and just published an overview of the ones I thought were the best.

Back from #nhff ! It was a wonderful time, just like last year. Across the four days, I saw 17 features and 28 shorts.
I'm gonna write a wrap-up blog post in the next few days, focusing on the highlights. Since these are mostly small, indie, low or no-budget films, I don't want to publicly shame the bad ones, because I admire their effort.
That being said, I'll also log them on Letterboxd, along with some less formal thoughts, since I feel like that's more personal.
