Kat-5-Hurrikan #MELISSA nähert sich #Jamaika und wird dort in den nächsten Stunden auf Land treffen.
Ein Flieger der Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter meldete um 14 Uhr (MEZ), dass sich MELISSA weiter verstärkt und nun 1-min. Mittelwinde von bis zu 290 km/h aufweist! Der Kerndruck wurde auf 896 hPa geschätzt!
Dazu rechnet das #NHC (National Hurricane Center) in Jamaika bis Mittwoch mit mehreren hundert l/m² Regen, was zu katastrophalen Stutzfluten und zahlreichen Erdrutschen führen wird.

Melissa is, now, very much a picture perfect hurricane, 901mbar and 175mph/280kmh sustained winds at the core vortex walls.

The IR signature is scary, but it shows a slight cooling of the core vortex. This means the storm has stopped "feeding" is will hopefully start dissipating energy, as it drags over landmasses. Unfortunately, that energy will be dissipated by wrecking #Jamaica and #Haiti.

Track of Melissa has taken the storm much more west ward than I hoped, and it's smack S off of Jamaica island. This means the ENE stream which WILL push it NE will go through the most populous area.

Latest estimates put the storm going much further NE, because the ENE stream has solidified and grown stronger, maybe due to Tropical Storm Sonia bumping a mass of air, WSW off Mexico.

That dark spot on the IR image is very hot air rising, sucking the storm in, along with more moisture. It's hurricane super food.

Tropical Storm Jerry, soon Trop Cyclone, is turning, due to top shearing, it seems.

Thankfully, Bermuda might not get dead-on hit, but still suffer edge of the vortex. Leewards and Puerto Rico may get a Trop Storm bash of rain, but most of the peak energy of the cyclone will be spent on open waters. Bermuda should get trop storm winds by late Friday evening, rain lasting until early morning Monday.
