  1. The Guardian is still clinging desperately onto the illusion of Saint Andy, despite all the evidence that he's got #NewerLabour written all through him like a stick of Brighton rock. Growth will always be prioritised over taking the necessary action in response to climate change, despite it leading to dangerous and irresponsible policies.

It's business as usual, only the brand name has changed.

  2. It makes perfect sense to cluster new housing round transport hubs, but I'm dead against nibbling away at any more of the green belt. A succession of small bites here and there adds up to a lot by breaking up the totality into smaller enclaves. The smaller they are, the less important they'll be deemed in future plans. It's the thin edge of the wedge. It's on a par with #NewerLabour weakening green initiatives to appease corporate donors.

  3. 'Anna Turley, the minister for border security and asylum, said on GB News on Friday that people had a right to protest but that the disorder in Thetford had been “horrendous”.'

I'm waiting for #NewerLabour to call this what it really is: domestic terrorism orchestrated by the racist right. Meanwhile, it's still a criminal offence to hold up a sign saying, 'I support Palestine Action, I oppose genocide.'

  4. If these were synagogues, #NewerLabour would be falling over itself to performatively fund security, anything to ward off the antsemitism label. Islamophobia, hardly at all. 'Two-tier policing' is a reality, and this is an example of it.

No wonder #NewerLabour won't have PR for the next election. And the next, and the next. An endless process of kicking the can down the road.

  6. 'The anti-Islamophobia non-profit Muslim Engagement and Development urged police to “treat this as what the evidence indicates: Islamophobic, far-right terror”.'

Time also for #NewerLabour to define Islamophobia with the same criteria and standards as it does antisemitism. Where's the moral panic and media outrage here?

I think Burnham will revert to the #NewerLabour mean the closer he gets to No 10. They won't let him inside the door otherwise. In the meantime, it's an entertaining episode in the Downing Street soap opera. An everyday story of Westminster folk.

I've always thought the Greens should have fought to win in Makerfield. They let themselves be used by a party that cares only for its own electoral success, not the broader good. You'll have heard of the Bain principle, which states that 'Scottish Labour MPs have a convention of not supporting motions put down by the Scottish National Party.' It's unlikely the Greens will get any quid pro quo out of this, especially since #NewerLabour fear the left.

  9. The Greens are letting themselves down by not vigorously contesting Makerfield. Sarah Wakefield could have made an impact by attacking #NewerLabour's feeble centre-right policies and demanding real change from Burnham if he becomes PM. It would have been a great showcase for Green policies.

That is if it went down as John Crace suggests. He's a brilliant sketch writer, but some of the ways he interprets events leave me wondering if that's what actually happened.

  10. 'Government and police are discussing a review of police promises on tackling racial bias against black people, however, ministers are convinced some of the wording is clumsy and open to attack.'

Translation: Yes, #NewerLabour are against racist violence, but they'd like to get a little traction on Reform turf by subtly suggesting that white people are in more danger than they actually are. We're there for them. So let's fiddle with a few words. Why waste a moral panic?

'However, she said she thought the byelection, to be held on 18 June, was “so consequential” because of Burnham’s support for electoral reform and proportional representation, which the Greens have long pushed for.'

Yes, but why would you trust Burnham to deliver on these promises? He's already tailoring his principles to fit the leadership contest. #NewerLabour unequivocally does not want PR.

  12. 'Milburn says migrants not to blame for Neets crisis but falling immigration creates ‘opportunity’.'

#NewerLabour minister combines a racist dog whistle to Reform voters while ostensibly saying the opposite. At the same time, he's all but admitting that immigrants do the shit, low-paid jobs that Brits wouldn't touch with a barge pole. The word 'opportunity' is a concealed threat to the effect that if they don't do these shit, low-paid jobs then they'll be sanctioned.

  13. @therightarticle

Given the way the press are demonising her, this should be the signal for the Greens to give it the full welly in the byelection. Go at it like they want to win instead of feeling sorry for #NewerLabour.

  14. @ChrisMayLA6

I think this is wrong. The Greens should be running a full-blooded, wholehearted campaign to win. They don't owe #NewerLabour anything, and won't be thanked for falling on their sword. The schadenfreude would be enormous if the Greens won despite holding back. I think it's up to all decent people to campaign on their behalf.

  15. @jmeosbn

I think the Greens are in danger of being too nice. #NewerLabour won't hesitate to stab them in the back. I think Andy Burnham will drop his principles as and when necessary, and migrate to the right just as Starmer did.

  16. @Geri

Good. #NewerLabour despise the left, and the Greens will get no thanks for easing Andy Burnham into No 10. He'll stab them in the back as soon as he can. I hope the Greens fight hard for Makerfield.

  17. @markhburton

The Greens were right to drop him. But I still think they should put up an effective candidate. For one thing, Burnham is on course to dump all his progressive baggage in the run to be PM, and for another, #NewerLabour won't be grateful for the help. They'll still despise the left and cosy up to the right, because that's the party they are now. Burnham as PM won't change that. He's already u-turned on the EU and immigration.

  18. @Walrus

As soon as Burnham gets a whiff of power, he starts reverting to the #NewerLabour mean. It's a pity the Greens are standing down their candidate. It's not as if Burnham as PM is likely to be grateful.

  19. Atrocities should be documented. Now imagine the response to a similiar London exhibition documenting the impact of Israel's collective punishment on Palestinians, including the preceding decades of apartheid. #NewerLabour would ban it on the grounds of antisemitism because only one narrative is allowed here. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the full range of voices. History without balance becomes propaganda.

Just guessing, but maybe go back to all the promises Starmer trashed when he became leader of #NewerLabour. When he had to compete against Corbyn.
