I think the introduction (invention, discovery?) of this protocol (and its associates) is what made all audio and video calling IP programs we have today (there are dozens - Skype, Zoom, Facetime, Messenger, and dozens more) possible.
I remember the problem at the time severely limited deployment and use of programs like NetMeeting.

It's amazing how much has changed in 25 years. In 1998 I was a Microsoft Netmeeting MVP. VoIP and video calling was barely functional in the internet of the day. Now there are dozens of fully functional (and free) video calling programs.

Microsoft #NetMeeting kam aber nur wenige Monate später auf den Markt, ab dann waren auch (mehr oder weniger) Videokonferenzen möglich: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_NetMeeting
