Had a bit of a ride last night before #nerdshow when I had, earlier in the day, both ignored best practice and instinct.
I use a MacBook Pro for the studio recording and some media playback. It’s a 2020 Intel model, which is being abandoned with the last of the x86 crew by HMS Apple Silicon for macOS 27.
I was running Sequoia, which has been a very stable and usable version of macOS, but felt that I’d be best to upgrade, so I did. What I did not do is test to see if any of the DJ setup would work, and guess what?
My Pioneer DJM-250MK2 has been a very good mixer, but had I known about its software needs beforehand I may have stuck with the Numark M6 USB. It not only requires drivers, but has a configuration utility for inputs and outputs. Oh, and there are firmware updates too.
Sequoia to Tahoe nuked the drivers I’d been using, so when I finally opened the DJM utility and saw this message, I thought that I’d fixed the complete and utter lack of audio out or in. Not quite!
Drivers updated, still nothing. However, poking around in the DJM utility finally got audio out to the mixer from the MBP. Then followers about 25 minutes of cursing, opening and closing apps, probably one more reboot, and finally the fix.
What I did not realize is that the mixer outputs from USB were all available, but only one was showing a selection “REC OUT” which is what I wanted. No other selection yielded a change, but when I looked closer and found that the other two USB channels could also pick, it worked.
Nerd Show only started 30 minutes late and I won’t have to worry about this again, for a while. Now to see if they have Apple Silicon support for drivers and software…
