  6. THAT was satisfying. I've been printing the front for a sidecar-type enclosure for my ACA500+ Amiga accellerator for use with my A1000...at an angle, on supports, as you do to make it look nice. I grab hold of it and pull, and the business end of the print just snaps off. Y'know, sometimes it's the little things in life #amiga #a1k #3dprinting #retrocomputing #nerdery

  11. Hey fellow nerds.

How do you handle large-ish volume backups between Linux hosts? About 1TB of data. Source has 100Mbps upload. Receiving end is Gbit.

Incrementals will be essential, since full backup is nearly a day's worth of upload.

FOSS suggestions only at this stage. It's currently performing backups put of my control with Veeam and I'm a bit nervous about the whole situation being out of my hands.

(Well, probably any 8-bit character set really)

  14. The rainy day's been good for finding some Round Tuits at home. I upgraded Woodpecker CI, put auth in front of VictoriaLogs, fixed the network weirdness with my wife's k8s lab, and did some other long-awaited upgrade and backup activity. Hurrah.

  15. Saw someone on here talking about how medical offices keep mistaking OP's email for various patients' emails and sending OP these patients' medical records.

Makes me think of how in my email address, the username part is an entire sentence. I created it more than 25 years ago and will never change it unless forced to. Even though I have to spell it for intake nurses and secretaries everywhere.

    The #nerdery is worth it. 😁 🖖

  27. Local peeps, I know a bunch of stuff got rain-dated to Sunday buuut try to stop by the Armory for CaziCon! It’s such a great local convention and should be a ton of fun. (And yeah - I’ll have these Trek bags for sale.)

Arts at the Armory, 191 Highland Ave, Somerville
    10a - 3p
Free admission! Many cool local vendors, artists, and DMs will be there with great panel programming and games for all ages.

  28. Okay, quick question about Coruscant: Where does its atmosphere come from? If the entire planetary surface is city, where is the local equivalent of the Amazon, plus all the other greenery, that breathes out the air humans need? Asking for a species, lol. #Andor #nerdery

I use em/en dashes all the time, even here, but mostly in my professional work. I'm sure nobody else really notices, but I do. I pad em dashes — as in a space before and after — heh — while a lot of pubs don’t and I think it looks bad.

  31. The Apple world clock app is limited to 24 cities, which as there are 24 time zones on this rock makes some sense.

I now have them all sorted west/east:

    Honolulu
    Anchorage
    Los Angeles
    Albuquerque
    Chicago
    Louisville
    Manaus
    Buenos Aires
    Grytviken (South Georgia island)
    Praia (Cabo Verde)
    UTC (aka GMT/London)
    Madrid
    Tel Aviv
    Addis Ababa
    Samara (evil Putinland)
    Astana (Kazakhstan)
    Dhaka
    Bangkok
    Singapore
    Tokyo
    Brisbane (weirdly, east of Sydney)
    Hobart (Tassie)
    Suva (Fiji)
    Auckland

Phew! Obvs I got to the airport a little too early. 😃 Some were hard to find! #Nerdery

  33. So, I heard the kids are crazy about wood accents on their gaming PCs nowadays. Making a little wooden touch on my own computer here, with a 3D-printed C64 side bracket and a scrap piece of thick ipe veneer. It's a little rough around the edges still, but I think it might work out ok when it's oiled and lightly sanded. #nerdery #commodore #c64 #retrocomputing

  34. I haven't read that take anywhere yet, but hear me out: What if midichlorians aren't the cause of Force sensitivity but an effect of Force sensitivity? Midichlorians flourish in organisms with Force sensitivity so measuring their levels is just a proxy for the person's potential. #starwars #nerdery

  35. The TNGbag is shaping up delightfully. Exterior is done, lining is already cut and should come together pretty quickly. I need to revise the way I do the front pockets on these bags as the pleats on the cargo pocket really are too much for my machine to handle - there’s a few other sticky spots but that one is quite bad.

But damn, I’m pleased at how closely the vision and the reality are aligning.

  36. 🧠 Tales from Sleepy Brain 🧠

03:48, pssst, hey, remember those Juniper SRX650 on eBay? I bet there's at least two dual 10GbE XPIMs on sale!
03:49, "no, brain, not now, sleeping. don't need another SRX650."

03:49, oh but what about CheckPoint firewalls that have Xeons and can be gutted and modded for BSD? let's find one... or two!
    03:50, "no. sleeping. quiet now."

    03:50, You'll miss me when I'm gone!
    03:50, "stop"

03:50, ok, but the Palo Alto PA-850 with enterprise license.. let's find two for H/A mode for the lab!

  39. 👾 SiH²O, TECs, AMD, PPC 👾

Have you ever used a 'thermo-electric cooler' (aka Peltier device)? Have you used one on an AMD Socket AM5, and not burned down the system or frozen cooling lines? If so, I'd love to hear experiences!

I'm considering the above on a hypothesis/PoC sorta basic, insofar as exploring the options for a potential application during restoration of my watercooled PowerMac G5 (4C PPC-970MP).

The last time I looked into TECs was at the start of the water-cooling wars in 1999... assumptions assume that the landscape is more efficient and less slap-together.

  40. 🩷 Network Shenanigans Saturday 🩷

Quick post here, lots to attempt to do today...

Let's say that you have a bunch of OCP NICs but not so many systems that will take that form factor; what to do?

Unexpectedly find some OCP to PCIe slot adapters! Mount them, use them, move on with life. 🤩

Carriers are from Dell and the NICs are Mellanox ConnectX-5 25GbE (SKU MCX542A-ACAN), but they work with all of the other OCP NICs that I have as well (Intel, Broadcom, Qlogic, other Mellanox).
