"Calla Lily," Fidelia Bridges, 1875.

Bridges (1834-1923) was an American painter who is best known as a Pre-Raphaelite, or "Romantic Realist" as American Pre-Raphaelites were called. She was known for her delicately, microscopically detailed yet serene depictions of plant life, generally in natural surroundings; according to some, she successfully combined romanticism and science.

She attended the Pennsylvania Institute of Fine Arts and was a friend of illustrator Howard Pyle, and with Pyle was an early environmentalist, joining the American Forestry Association. She was also governess to Mark Twain's daughters for a year! He later became a collector of her art. She also became an early designer of greeting cards...which some critics feel has made later generations devalue her work.

Once highly sought after, she's fallen a bit from the radar, in part because she worked a lot in watercolor, which is a bit light-sensitive and delicate for exhibiting. But seek out her stuff, it's lovely.
