I wonder if ST:TNG actually coined the term “nanite.” It was certainly the first place I remember hearing the word.

According to OED, the oldest reference is a 1990 issue of Cinefantastique According to Memory Alpha, the episode “Evolution" aired Septemner 25, 1989.

Chances are pretty good that the magazine article was about that Next Gen episode.
