We might or might not be able to classify music into a super genre, but when it comes to subgenres, it's almost impossible to choose between them. For example, a piece of music could be 50% blues, 30% rock, and 20% alternative. Therefore, it's natural to see different categorizations from different points of view.

In many contexts in our lives, when we want to learn something new, we use "categorization" to understand and distinguish things better. Sometimes it works, but other times things are correlated, and we cannot strictly place them in a specific category. Instead, we can have a spectrum or a mixture of multiple categories. One of those things is music, and perhaps all other forms of art.

Okay. I've been using Spotify as my streaming platform for a couple of years now, and I've come to the conclusion that they don't really understand music.

Why? Sure, I have broad tastes in music. It's not quite "anything goes" but it gets fairly close. But how many genres does that actually cover? How many genres of music are there really? This time last year, they told me I listened to 43 different genres, and used words like "astronaut." At the time, I was sceptical, but shrugged it off. This year, it was 91 different genres. And their description was "vampire."

Yes, I can accept their list of my top artists - that was fairly straight forward. (JS Bach in the top spot, Cold Chisel in second place, and what I call classic jazz for the rest? Yeah. That rings true.) But how does that make me a vampire?

And just what are those 91 categories? (And why was one of my top five genres "jazz performance"? That's not useful information.)

I don't get it, Spotify.
