  1. This is where the White River begins, at the lower end of Emmons Glacier on Mount Rainier.

You can follow the meltwater winding downhill through the rocks toward the forest below.

What I really liked was the sunlight illuminating the evergreen treetops, adding warmth to an otherwise cool, rugged landscape. 📷

  2. The first golden light of sunrise on Mount Rainier, photographed from Chinook Pass.

I liked the contrast between the illuminated snow and the dark, layered mountain ridges below. 📷

It was a beautiful way to start the day. 🌞

  3. I photographed Little Tahoma Peak from the Sunrise area of Mount Rainier National Park early one July morning.

I liked how the sunlight brought out the rugged rock formations while clouds drifted across the glaciers below. The evergreen trees on either side made a natural frame for the mountain.

It was a beautiful morning to be up in the mountains. 🏔️📷

  4. While I was hiking near the Emmons Moraine Trailhead in Mount Rainier National Park, I stopped at Jane's Lake to take a few photos.

I liked how the calm water reflected the evergreens along the shoreline, with the blue water adding contrast to all the green. The foreground trees also helped give the scene some depth.

It was a quiet spot and a nice place to stop for a while.

What catches your eye first, the blue water or the reflections?

  5. Stevens Peak in the Tatoosh Range, Mount Rainier National Park

While I was hiking the Skyline Trail in Mount Rainier National Park, I stopped to photograph Stevens Peak to the south.

I liked the contrast between the warm sunrise sky, cool blue ridges, and rugged mountain slopes. It felt good to be out on the trail early in the morning with a view like this.

  6. Fall color across the hillside at Paradise, Mount Rainier National Park.

Wednesday morning at Paradise, fall color covered the hillside in bands of pink, red, gold, and green between the evergreens.

I really liked how the colors seemed to flow across the slope, with the evergreens breaking up the different layers.

Fall at Mount Rainier doesn’t last long, but when the color arrives, it can be spectacular. 🍂📷

  7. Last Wednesday morning at Paradise, I followed the Skyline Trail through some of the strongest fall color I saw that day.

I liked how the trail curved through the red and yellow foliage toward Mount Rainier.

Would you stop here for a photo, or keep following the trail? 🍂🏔️📷

  8. Wednesday morning I headed up to Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park to see how the fall colors were looking.

I spent most of my time along the Alta Vista Trail, just off the Skyline Trail, and it had some of the best fall color I saw anywhere in the park. There were large areas of yellow and red foliage, and when the sunlight hit them, the colors became incredibly bright.

It was a great trail to hike through because the color continued almost the entire way up. I eventually made it up to Glacier Vista, but I kept coming back to the Alta Vista area for photographs because there was so much colorful foliage there with Mount Rainier in the background.

I really enjoyed hiking through this part of Paradise. This is a great time to visit if you want to see the fall foliage near its peak colors. 🍂🏔️📷

  9. Morning light on Mount Rainier

While photographing Mount Rainier last week, I noticed the first morning light beginning to reach the upper mountain above the dark forest below.

I liked the contrast between the bright snow and rock on Rainier and the layers of trees beneath it. The forest really helps show just how massive the mountain is from this viewpoint.

One of those scenes that made me stop and take a closer look. 📷

  10. Reflection Lake, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

After spending the night photographing the stars at Mount Rainier, I got up early for sunrise at Reflection Lakes.

The water was nearly still, with a thin layer of mist drifting across the lake. The first sunlight was beginning to reach the trees and foreground grasses.

It was a quiet and peaceful way to finish the photoshoot.

  11. Early fall at Mount Rainier, Washington

Wednesday morning on the south side of Mount Rainier, I found one of the first strong patches of fall color I’ve seen this year.

What caught my eye was how the red and orange foliage covered the hillside, standing out against the green evergreens behind it. 🍂

  12. Yesterday morning at Reflection Lake in Mount Rainier National Park

What caught my eye was the thin layer of mist above the water, with Mount Rainier and the trees reflected below. I liked how the little evergreens along the shoreline framed the view.

A peaceful way to spend an early morning. 🌲🏔️

  13. One view from Bench Lake that really caught my eye was this closer look at Mount Rainier.

I liked the contrast between the bright snowfields, dark rocky ridges, and that deep blue sky. 🏔️

  14. While I was at Bench Lake earlier this week, I spent some time along the shoreline watching Mount Rainier and the reflections across the water.

I really liked how the rocks, old log, trees, lake, and mountain all came together in this view. It was one of those places where I was happy to just slow down, look around, and enjoy being there.

This ended up being one of my favorite photos from that hike. 📷

  15. I hiked up to Bench Lake at Mount Rainier National Park on Tuesday evening. It was fairly cloudy and hazy when I got there, and the lake still had a lot of waves, so I was wondering if I had made the trip for nothing.

But between 7 and 8 pm as the sun set, the clouds cleared, the wind calmed down, the lake went completely flat. That is when this beautiful reflection of Mount Rainier appeared, with just a slight alpenglow on the mountain and in the water.

It was absolutely delightful to watch it all come together.

  16. Small waterfall near Reflection Lake.

This was one of those quieter stops in Mount Rainier National Park that would be easy to pass by, but the shape of the falls and the small peak rising in the far background is what caught my eye.

I liked how the scene had both things at once, the close-up rush of water in front and that quiet mountain view tucked behind it.

What catches your eye first, the waterfall or the peak in the distance?

  17. Mount Rainier Rising Over the Ridge

What I love most about this view is the scale. The trees and jagged rock ridge make Mount Rainier feel enormous as it rises behind them. And the bright snow against the deep blue sky makes the whole mountain pop.

  18. Mount Rainier and the First Blue Openings at Tipsoo Lake

What caught my eye here was the mix of deep snow, evergreen trees, and those small blue meltwater pools opening up beneath the mountain. The lake was still mostly frozen, but spring was clearly starting to push through.

It felt bright, quiet, and full of mountain stillness.

What catches your eye first, Mount Rainier or the thawing lake below?

  19. A few more from my trip to Mount Rainier National Park a couple of weeks ago.

(Cross-posted from my site, where you can view the additional photos: andrewflenniken.com/2025/10/28)

Since the road up to Sunrise was already closed I went to the White River campground instead.  Most of it was already closed as well, but the day-use area wasn't and it's right next to the river which suited my purposes nicely.  I wanted to get some shots of the riverbed receding off into the distance towards the mountain with the source of the river, the Emmons Glacier, visible.

Which I got!  Please enjoy them.  :)

I've also included a color version of one of last week's shots.  I think it works equally well in color; it's just great in a different way.
