  1. So, here’s my final ranking of the John Wick franchise:

    4) Chapter 4
    3) Chapter 2
    2) Chapter 3 - Parabellum
    1) The original John Wick

    6/6

  2. John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)

This movie looks beautiful! The colors and the framing of the shots are just top-notch! It’s a shame that it’s much too long and also not that exciting. The action scenes throughout the whole movie mostly are people curled up in close-up combat. Which gets a bit stale quite quickly.

It’s not a bad movie, but just too long and also not that surprising in terms of action after seeing all other titles.

The best action scene for me was the one with the Dragon’s Breath shotgun: It’s stylish, it’s creatively shot and also impressively choreographed.

  3. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)

Again it’s a step up in terms of almost everything.
What makes the movie really enjoyable for me, is how varied the action is. There are chases on motorcycles and horses as well as a great sequence with dogs.

What I found a bit weak was the ending on the rooftop of the Continental. Also, it’s a tad long.

To name the best action sequence in this part is difficult, so I pull a joker and name the whole siege on the Continental from start until right before the rooftop scene. Visceral gun fights and some great performances by Yayan Ruhian, Cecep Arif Rahman and of course Mark Dacascos.

  4. John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)

It’s noticeable that more money was involved in the creation of this movie. The whole scale is taken up several notches and the action becomes more spectacular. Also, this time we’re getting closer to a who-is-who show of action cinema and stunt work. It also opens up the “Wick Universe” with more lore and backstory. It’s stretched quite thin, but it’s still interesting.

In terms of best action sequence it’s a close one between the escape to the Continental Rome and the mirror scene close to the end of the movie.

  5. John Wick (2014)

For me, this is one of those guilty pleasure movies. The character of John being mystified as some kind of an otherworldly assassin that has been reawakened by some idiot mobster brat and his unstoppable quest for revenge is just very satisfying to watch.

What makes the movie so good for me, is the focus of director Chad Stahelski on the action, which makes quite the difference in fight scenes.
What’s also important to note is that the movie is as long as it needs to be and does not drag out any sequences.

Best action sequence for me is the Red Circle nightclub and I always like seeing Daniel Bernardt.

  6. Watched the (currently) last John Wick movie this weekend. A good opportunity to revisit #MossysMovieRankings.

As last time, I’ll start with a quick review of each part of the series and then give my ranking of the movies.

    Let’s go.

  7. Here my ranking of the #MissionImpossible series from worst to best:

    6) Mission: Impossible II (2000)
    5) Mission: Impossible (1996)
    4) Mission: Impossible III (2006)
    3) Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)
    2) Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)
    1) Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)

  8. Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)

The latest film in the series raises the bar in every aspect. Some of the action sequences are simply breathtaking, especially considering Tom Cruise did all his own stunts.

However, in my opinion, sometimes it's a bit too much. Particularly towards the end, it gets a bit long. Still, it's a really good action film.

Looking forward to the next parts. Now, to my ranking:

  9. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)

Basically the same mix that worked so well in the predecessor. However, in my opinion, the staging by Christopher McQuarrie is even more dynamic and intense.
The sequences in the opera or in the SCIF followed by a chase are just two examples (just compare the motorcycle scenes in this film with those in the second part!).

Moreover, Rebecca Ferguson and Sean Harris are two exciting additions to the cast.

  10. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)

More pace, more spectacle, more humor. Add to that cool gadgets and some fantastic stunts. The mix simply works perfectly in this case.

Before Christopher McQuarrie took over directing for the following films, Brad Bird made his live-action directing debut with this film. Pretty well done.

  11. Mission: Impossible III (2006)

Better in every respect than its predecessor. To illustrate, here are three points:

    1. Philip Seymour Hoffman makes a really good villain.
    2. The entire production (locations, continuity, dialogues, etc.) is more cohesive.
    3. A touch of humor really benefits this and the subsequent films.

It's quite remarkable that they handed J.J. Abrams 150 million dollars for his first feature film. It certainly paid off in the end.

  12. Mission: Impossible II (2000)

Sadly not good. Annoying characters do illogical things, sometimes without any connection. According to reports, it's likely due to the fact that John Woo's first cut was 3.5 hours long, which was way too long for Paramount, resulting in a radical cut down to two hours.

At least Limp Bizkit contributed a snazzy cover version of the original theme by Lalo Schifrin to the soundtrack with "Take A Look Around".

  13. Soon there will be new content for #MossysMovieRankings: We are starting with the #MissionImpossible series today.
Particularly excited about the action scenes and tech gadgets over the years, and whether the second part is as bad as I remember it.

  14. 1st Place: Ocean's 11
The first part of the series is unsurpassed in its mix of charm, wit, and clever burglary scenarios. With a high-caliber cast and excellent direction by Steven Soderbergh, it sets the standard for all subsequent heist movies. The chemistry is just right and it often ends up in the player for relaxation.

  15. 2nd Place: Ocean's 13
The third part of the series returns more to its roots and offers a solid heist story, which convinces through the chemistry of the ensemble and a great atmosphere. All characters get a successful performance for the finale, and Al Pacino as the nuisance adds extra entertainment value.

  16. 3rd Place: Ocean's 12
Unfortunately, the sequel cannot keep up with the first part. Even though the return of the entire original cast is pleasing and some gags are really good, the plot seems a bit too constructed. Moreover, the whole part with Julia Roberts and Bruce Willis is just terribly annoying. The soundtrack, however, is top-notch, but that's true for all films in the series.

  17. After the last edition of #MossysMovieRankings with the #MonsterVerse got pretty loud and a lot got destroyed, my wife and I decided to relax by re-watching the Ocean's Trilogy over the past few days. We enjoy re-watching these films because they're great for unwinding. So, let's start with the ranking.

    (1/4)
    #movies #cinema #filmseries #OceansTrilogy

  18. 1st Place: Godzilla

For me, this is an all-around great monster movie. Director Gareth Edwards knew how to stage the monsters perfectly. Often from the perspective of tiny humans, they appear as forces of nature to which one is at the mercy. Additionally, the tension arc works really well.

Another #MCU-Funfact: In this movie, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen play a married couple. A year later, in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it's only enough for siblings. 😀

    (5/5)
    #MossysMovieRankings

  19. 2nd Place: Godzilla vs. Kong

The movie is incredibly colorful and really packs a punch in the Kaijū sequences. Of the two storylines, only the one with Millie Bobby Brown remains unlikable. The other, centered around Kong, is also blunt but more interesting.

Director Adam Wingard seems to be really into the madness, and the movie feels more coherent and less arbitrary than its predecessor. Plus, I absolutely love the colorful look, which really pops on the OLED-TV.

  20. 3rd Place: Kong: Skull Island

This film stands out from the others in the series because it takes place 40 years before the others. The mix of Vietnam War movie elements and adventure film creates a unique atmosphere. As a setup for the later films, it's good and the soundtrack is decent, but it also has its slow moments here and there, and I miss the excessive destruction scenes a bit. 😅

#MCU-Funfact: Captain Marvel and Loki fly with Nick Fury to an island.

    (3/5)
    #MossysMovieRankings

  21. 4th Place: Godzilla II: King of Monsters

Increasing the number of Kaijū (monsters) and digging deeper into Tōhō's repertoire was certainly a good idea. The beasts look powerful, and the destruction is more gigantic than in the first.

However, the movie's biggest flaw lies in the almost consistently unsympathetic human main characters. Moreover, Michael Dougherty just doesn't seem to be the best director. The - already thin - story becomes increasingly convoluted.

  22. So let's start with the #MonsterVerse. First, the order in which the films have been released so far:

    2014 – #Godzilla
    2017 – #Kong: Skull Island
2019 – Godzilla II: King of Monsters
    2021 – Godzilla vs. Kong

As one of my guilty pleasures is movies with a lot of destruction, this series is a real treat. Moreover, the UHD Blu-rays, assuming you have the appropriate home theater equipment, are reference material, particularly the last installment.

    Now for my ranking.
