  1. I really don't get all of the negativity about #MOOC's that seems to have been resurrected lately... sure they never replaced #highered, but were they ever going to really? They seem to have filled a niche market that was unserved, and isn't that what is most valuable?

  2. I'm trying to find a hub / directory / central for publishing e-learning courses.
I gave up, there is no more hub.moodle.org or anything similar.
What am I missing? Where do course developers publish (free) courses nowadays?
EPALE seems to be the only such platform, but it's clunky (as most EU related websites).

  3. Another policy brief has been published by #GES4SEAS. It is about how healthy oceans relate to healthy societies. This was the topic of our very first #MOOC about ocean #health.

  7. In #MOOC 4 about tipping points #TIPP we explored the importance of "why it is best not to reach them". The #GES4SEAS project has now published a policy brief on this topic:

    🔗 zenodo.org/records/19189962

Why tipping points are important when managing marine systems?

  9. Hence, we need to balance our narrative about the future of the ocean.
A few years ago, we published a paper prioritizing topics for a positive action from media, scientists and society.

  10. In Europe, this is translated into the Nature Restoration Regulation,
The target is recover 20% of the sea by 2030, and all ecosystems by 2050.
See you next week, with more hope for the #ocean
    #GES4SEAS #MOOC #oceanoptimism
    environment.ec.europa.eu/topic

  11. At the same time, we have the UN Decade on Ecosystems Restoration 2021-2030,
This is to prevent, halt and reverse loss of nature and #biodiversity #GenerationRestoration

  12. There are plenty of actions to study the ocean, including mapping the #seabed, #eDNA expeditions, satellite observations, #bluecarbon studies, etc.
    #GES4SEAS #MOOC #oceanoptimism
    oceandecade.org/decade-actions/

  13. All the examples we have seen up to now are supported by good science.
We have the UN Decade of the Oceans 2021-2030 "The science we need for the ocean we want" to do this good science
    @UNOceanDecade

  14. More hope for #ocean
The Marine Protection Atlas measures progress toward protecting 30% of the #ocean in fully and highly protected areas by 2030.
As of today, 9.6% of the ocean is protected and 3.2% is highly protected.

  15. Also, Duarte et al show the recovery trends of marine populations,
For example, assessed fish stocks and marine mammals, with clear recovery
They show many examples of hope, if management is adequately undertaken
    #GES4SEAS #MOOC #oceanoptimism #MarineEcology #Research

  16. These authors show the global growth of restoration interventions,
These have been done in #MPAs Marine Protected Areas, #coral and oyster reefs, #saltmarshes, #mangroves, kelps and #seagrasses
There is a clear increase of recovery in recent years
    #GES4SEAS #MOOC #oceanoptimism #MarineEcology #Research

  17. We follow with our previous comment on rebuilding sea life
Duarte et al (in Nature, in 2020) think that sustainably use of the #ocean requires this rebuilding
Recovery of #habitats and ecosystems following past #conservation interventions

  18. After some research, from 1869 to 2016, one third of European #seagrass area was lost due to disease, deteriorated water quality, and coastal development
The highest decline was the 1970s and 1980s

  19. At global level, we have good news!
In January, the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement entered into force. This legally binding UN High Seas Treaty covers the ocean zones that lie beyond national waters
    What does this mean? #GES4SEAS #MOOC #oceanoptimism #MarineEcology #Research

  20. some fishing communities are becoming aware about problems at sea and the benefits provided by marine protection. Como with #GES4SEAS to learn in this #MOOC #MarineEcology #Research

  21. We follow today with our #GES4SEAS #MOOC on #oceanoptimism. Coastal ecosystems and the fishing communities that depend on them are impacted globally by extreme #climate events (storms, heatwaves, etc.) and human pressures, as in these lobster and sea cucumber #fisheries

  22. Many other large marine vertebrates have also increased in numbers thanks to protection, including #whales and sea #turtles.
All of this is in benefit of #biodiversity, but also on marine health, and human well-being
    #GES4SEAS #MOOC #oceanoptimism

  23. Studies have shown that thanks to this recovery, #kelp beds have increased and shoreline erosion has been reduced.
In this photo from Laney White @usgs-quakebot.bsky.social, you can see some sea otters resting in kelps recovered in this coast and providing multiple benefits

  25. Long shot, but FediVerse do your magic:

I am thinking about taking courses in #ArtHistory at a universarian level. Preferably online (#MOOC). I have scoured #Coursera and #edX but haven‘t really found a comprehensive course (there‘s bits and pieces all over).

Does anyone know of something or has additional pointers to look at?

  26. I love to learn, especially when I can choose the topic on my own and dive deeper into things that interest me most.

For 3 month, next to my work, I took a deep dive into sustainable tourism, did an online certificate at edX where I worked on a concept for sustainable workation. It was fun and challenging at the same time and cleared many thoughts which I had in my mind for longer.

  36. ZDNet: I took Harvard’s free online coding classes to better catch AI’s errors – and they’re legit. “If you want a program written, you can use an AI. 37. Marine #megafauna is at risk in many seas
Sea otters are iconic predators in the north Pacific, but they were heavily hunted for their fur in the 18th and 19th centuries, as @nancyknowlton.bsky.social comments in this post
    #GES4SEAS #MOOC #oceanoptimism

  38. What news do you hear about the ocean?
Media tends to highlight negative aspects such as #pollution, #overfishing, #biodiversity loss, #climatechange impacts, etc.
This makes society pessimistic about the future of the #ocean
    #GES4SEAS #MOOC

  39. In California, sea otters were once thought to be extinct but an isolated population of about 50 was found in 1914.
Subsequently protected by laws and treaties, they have slowly recovered, as shown in this graphic from @usgs-quakebot.bsky.social
    #GES4SEAS #MOOC #oceanoptimism

  40. We start our examples of good news with the recovery of the estuary of Bilbao, in Northern Spain
This picture shows the evolution of estuarine #biodiversity in past 30 years
    #GES4SEAS #MOOC #oceanoptimism

  41. You will learn about good practices and examples of recovery and good status of marine ecosystems around the world,
You can share them with your friends, students or family!
It is a good opportunity to change behaviour towards the #ocean
    #GES4SEAS #MOOC #oceanoptimism

  42. However, in recent decades, we have reacted and made progress, having examples of good management practices which give us hope for the future of the ocean.
    We call this #oceanoptimism
During these weeks, you will see examples worldwide
