  1. How about, instead of giving over $100M of Portland money to the billionaire owner of a sports team in return for ... whatevs??? ... we build a local, municipal ice rink.

  3. Dear #ModaCenter,

The nineties didn't call to get their design back, but offered to take the eyesore off our hands for a price.

Unlike the sublime inner architecture of the #LloydCenter: a perfect, ready-made community center/maker-space/climate refuge—‌about to be thrown to the capitalist wolves, while a billion dollar #Portland #Climate Action Fund stands idle—‌in spite of the obvious need for protected spaces for future weather disasters...

Threaten taking our #blazers = shakedown.

  5. Hey #Portland ... if you're concerned about the #ModaCenter deal, city council is taking public written testimony RIGHT NOW.

    portland.gov/council-clerk/tes

The public hearing was yesterday, but you can still submit a statement. It's fast and easy. The most important things is the support/oppose checkbox.

I suspect the Blazers are astroturfing the hell out of this process. If you oppose the massive giveaway of public funds, it's important to take a few secs and check "oppose".

  7. MODA

The Moda Center remains top of mind as we approach the City’s August 12th vote on a term sheet, but how can we reach a fair deal for Portlanders? What are the potential costs and benefits of publicly financing stadiums? How does the draft Moda terms compare to deals in other cities?

Join co-hosts Portland City Councilors Angelita Morillo and Mitch Green for an insightful and timely webinar on the Moda Center renovation with sports economists and professors J.C. Bradbury and Victor Matheson.

We’ll dive into the history of public financing of sports venues, impacts of professional sports franchises on local economies, and what it means for public funds to be used for the Moda Center renovation.

    August 5th from 5 – 6 pm PST

    Virtual Webinar, closed captioning provided

Presented and organized by Councilor Mitch Green's office

  9. Sorry, but #Portland has 635,000 residents and they want to dump $600 million into the #ModaCenter? That is a almost a thousand dollars per person!

  11. I think this article -- although a few days old -- is a good checkpoint on the Moda Center situation.

    nytimes.com/athletic/7459933/2

Mayor Wilson and Gov Kotek have been doing a grave disservice, trying to ram through a sweetheart deal for the Blazers' billionaire owner Thomas Dundon. Dundon has been playing them like a liddle fiddle.

Council President Dunphy's position seems better calibrated.

  13. The city has released a summary of the "term sheet" it sent to the Portland Trailblazers for the Moda Center renovations.

    portland.gov/hello/news/2026/7

The billionaire owner is asking for 100% public funding for this $357M (present day dollars) project.

Here, the city is asking for $3M/year (escalating over time) for the 20 year term of the agreement. So that's about $60M/$357M = 16.8% of the project cost.

That's a positive step IMO. I look forward to other analysis.

  15. When the Portland boosters start claiming we should make residents pay 100% to upgrade Moda Center because EcOnOmIc BeNeFiTs, ask them how's that going to work when FIFA in Seattle is proving to be a bust.

  20. I went to a District 4 "listening session" today for the Moda Center renovations. CM Green was there, as was a rep from VP Clark.

The session was HEAVILY brigaded by Blazer fans who are raising the specter of losing the team and demanding we give the owner everything he wants.

CM Green says he wants to see hard numbers on econ benefits, and is supportive of putting this to voters.

If you have an opinion, now is the time to share it.

  22. RE: pdx.social/@courtney/116732288

If you have strong feelings about #Portland using PCEF (climate) funds on the #RoseGarden (I won't call it the #ModaCenter) or other issues around the planned remodel, the city wants your feedback. My stance is that no one intended those funds to be a slush fund to fix any other problem the city may have.

  24. It's unconscionable that the city wants to raid the climate fund and community development fund to pay for Moda Center renovations without asking the big, private businesses that profit from it to contribute (esp. the Portland Trailblazers owner).

The city has launched a survey. You can give your feedback here:
