“universities are not meant to be profit centers, and shouldn’t be run that way. They are rather shared infrastructures dedicated to a form of mutual aid, in which those who have – in this case, knowledge – support those who need, with the goal of producing a more just and equitable society.” — Kathleen Fitzpatrick, from a talk at #mla2023 #mla23

The last time .@[email protected] was in San Francisco, I went to all the Joyce sessions with flyers about my WIP. Lurking now at #MLA2023 Twitter 20 years later and seeing it smartly doesn't focus on one Irish writer, but with BIPOC writers and scholars who are busy adding to my TBR pile.

Andy Hines gives a fascinating history of the division of labor and academia in early ideological disputes between the AAUP and AFL around the Red Summer moment -- at first I thought this was a history situated in 2022! Very much look forward to Hines's history of the split #MLA2023 #laboringacademia

@SarahBuchmeier points out the continuing needs of academics who move outside academia for *intellectual community* and support, and asks us to provide it. She asks that MLA and others continue to support the "academic diaspora" through library access, professional support, and continuing work on how to manage a research agenda as a public scholar. #laboringacademia #MLA2023

Weather-hypebeast energy around #MLA2023 only increases its air of magical exclusivity. Conference always protected by bomb cyclone or walls of mystic ice —solely to create internet drama

This is the name of the #MLA2023 paper I thought I was going to give this year: "Binge-Watching: Food Shows, Murder, and Pandemic Non-time." I have literally no f*cking idea what I meant by that title so instead I'm going to talk about Nao Bustamente's amazing sourdough ASMR video, "Breadphones." #MLA #2023MLA #academicchatter #litstudies
