"The Miskitu town is an indigenous community that inhabits the Atlantic coast of Honduras and Nicaragua, an area that is in a condition of social and economic abandon in which the only
source that is in a condition of social and economic abandonment and whose only source of employment and sustainability has been fishing by way of diving in the sea.

The majority of the population works in the fishing industry, and despite the million-dollar revenues of the industry, they do not have access to adequate labor conditions, health, social security or justice.

Many adolescent and adult Miskitos have been disabled and killed while practicing diving fishing activities, primarily due to the absence of adequate equipment and training, the dangerously high depths at which they dive, the excessive daily working hours and the lack of control and supervision of activities."

#Honduras: "A new player has entered the fray regarding the concession for the exploration and potential exploitation of hydrocarbons in the maritime zone of La Moskitia: the U.S. multinational Talos Energy, which is seeking an 80% stake in the oil concession as the project operator alongside the British firm CaribX (UK), which would hold the remaining 20%.

Among the shareholders of Talos Energy Inc. is Mexican businessman Carlos Slim, who holds 24% of the common stock.

The Honduran Black Fraternal Organization (Ofraneh) stated on Wednesday that the companies awarded the concession contract have continued oil exploration in the Honduran Moskitia without conducting a Free, Prior, and Informed Consultation (FPIC) with the local population.

More than 4,000 #Indigenous #Miskito #divers have in recent years suffered disabling injuries as a consequence of #decompression #sickness – the equivalent of roughly one in every nine men above the age of 14 in the entire department. At least 400 have died, and countless others have been lost at sea.
