So, I uploaded a couple of tunes to #mirlospace (Mirlo) but was unsuccessful with the same to #bandwagonfm on bandwagon.fm, I’m unsure what audio formats are allowable, WAV and FLAC definitely are not. Only lossy compression? I don’t use services that intentionally degrade the music I do. Only a simulacrum of my music is not what I’m willing to put out for consumption.
I realize that streaming services will degrade a track depending on the internet connection, but starting with a degraded signal for those listeners with a decent internet connection and decent gear to listen to my music with is a non-starter for me. Even when I’m actively listening to music on my phone, the least gear I use is a pair of earbuds with three speakers in each ear. Or if I’m at home, a set of $150 headphones. They’re the only way I can hear the subtleties of the music I favor. Think of the intricacies of Steely Dan music of just about any classical music.

10 years ago today, I released my final album, 'I Refuse To Do Any More Work On This Shit, So It's Yours, For Free' under the name cloudy, with occasional rain.

This collection of weird, fun #experimentalmusic still brings some joy to my cold, dark heart.

I'd like to start by saying that I make far less than what I spend to make it (not even counting the time spent).

What makes sense, I guess, is to build an audience (as in any other business), in a way that you like in order to be consistent.

Once you have that (which is probably the most difficult part), a small percentage will be willing to support and buy from you either the music or the merch.
Merch is important as many people do not care about buying music - even then some folks buy it just to support you, thankfully.

On top of that, you should make sure that all your music is properly registered for copyright and performance rights collections.

As for Bandcamp alternatives, I suggest setting up a Faircamp site (https://simonrepp.com/faircamp/) and a Mirlo account (https://mirlo.space).

I second this. However, Funkwhale does not integrate directly a support system as far as I know.

FairCamp is probably the best support tool as you're supporting directly the artist (minus the payment processor fees, I guess?).
On the other hand, not everyone is willing or has the possibility to set it up.

The second best might be https://mirlo.space which is also a "Bandcamp-style" kind of thing. Still somehow acts as a middle-man, but for non-techy users is quite a breeze to use.

None of them is federated though.

This release is called (surprise surprise) "Drum Pollution"!
Back then, I decided to publish everything I recorded in an isolated version, to allow people to check exactly what I'm playing on the record and, why not, jam on it!
