  1. A leaked Pentagon report suggested it could take six months to clear mines in the Strait of Hormuz, but the Pentagon has denied this, calling it 'dishonest journalism'.

  2. A friend is involved in a project training rats to sniff out mines for clearance. The rats are too light to trigger the mines, but bloody good at finding them, when there's a yummy reward in it for them.

Being a vegan, I was pretty concerned about this at first. But my friend says the rats are well cared for - as the essential workers they are - their bills are covered for housing, food, healthcare etc, and they have a retirement home to live out their natural life.

Even a highly accurate clock is wrong occasionally. This is a classic example of a solution (robots!) in search of a problem.

Instead of funding boondoggles that help corporations develop yet more proprietary tech, why not donate to some of the well-established mine-clearing methods?

  4. Ukraine faces one of the largest mine contamination issues since World War II, with ongoing clearance efforts likely to take 3-5 years to resolve 75-80% of the problem. The UN estimates Ukraine to be the most mine-contaminated country globally. Ukrainian forests still hold mines from WWII. The situation is compared to Europe's post-war clearance efforts. #Ukraine #MineClearance
