  1. #SissyCat and #MillieCat are getting into their routine. Each enjoying the morning sun and birds in the office with papa ( excuse the mess as we are putting it back together).

See the #MillieCat hashtag for the entire series of events of introducing our latest shelter rescue to the home. #CatsOfMastodon

  2. Three days with construction people in the house and #MillieCat and #SissyCat spent 8am to 3pm with their noses on the floor inches apart, bonding while peeking under the door crack because of their curiosity... They actually fell asleep and rolled over into each other and kept sleeping more than once. lol. #CatsOfMastodon

For those new to the drama, Sissy is our 4 year old shelter rescue that has been in the family for little over 3 years and Millie is an 8 year old rescue who spent the greater part of her life in the shelter that we brought into the home at the end of April and the two of them had a hard time bonding, esp Sissy.

  3. #MillieCat sleeps on the couch like this often when Penny is taking her nap. She has to touch someone when sleeping. She also sleeps with her eyes almost open all the way, all the time.

#SissyCat is coming along. She is trying to "fast" play with Millie but Millie resisting right now. Sissy became more loveable, though.

She really loves her new home. At 8 years old, spending much of her life as the Queen of the Shelter, I am glad to finally give her a home. #CatsOfMastodon

  4. #SissyCat and #MillieCat got into an incident today. No one injured too bad but blood was drawn from a slap. Millie 1, Sissy 0. Millie screams at the top of her lungs right before she does a slap. It was like a scream horn was being pushed on. Lasted a few seconds before the slap. Got to admit, even I checked myself. lol. I bet Sissy will take a step back the next time she hears that.

    It was innocent, too.

Sissy was zooming and zoomed into the play tunnel which Millie was standing at the end of. Sissy was just now starting to play again after bringing shelter cat Millie into the family. #Caturday #CatsOfMastodon

  5. Saga of the new shelter cat rescue: Penny woke up and #MillieCat was sleeping at her head and #SissyCat was sleeping at her feet. lol Sissy never slept with her. She sleeps with me usually.

Last night was the first time Millie was free to roam outside of the Cat Room basecamp at night

Sissy is now making allowances for Millie, like giving up spaces that she took over after our late #LittleBit passed away. She is holding her spaces that Little Bit gave up when we brought Sissy home from the shelter, though.

  6. #MillieCat and #SissyCat eating together...

They made a mess with their dry food earlier...

  7. 4/ I should note, Millie has been at the rescue for so long that she was in the shelter when Sissy was in the shelter 3 years ago. We wondered if #SissyCat and #MillieCat had a "history."

Every time Sissy would stare down Millie, or snap at Millie, Millie would look at Sissy like she was making fun of Sissy like, "Girl, I've been in the shelter most of my life. I've come across witches worse than you." LOL

Millie was never intimated by Sissy. I think she only had to take a defensive position once and Sissy ended up turning around and walking away. #CatsOfMastodon

  8. 3/ #SissyCat and #MillieCat update... Today is the 8th day and we did it! Millie, our new family member, an 8-year old shelter cat that has spent most of her time as Queen of the Rescue, is now roaming the house.

We didn't have a problem with Millie but our 4 year old rescue, Sissy, who we have had for 3 years, didn't take kindly to having another cat in the home.

Sissy is more playful. Today, Sissy dropped a play spring at Millie's feet and then turned around and brought one to me in the office.

Ending free range, free feeder eating did the trick.

We kept Millie in the Cat Room and brought her out and socialized them only when feeding and giving treats. We broke their eating schedules down to 4 small meals and two lite treat visits per day, so they met a lot. It only took an additional 3 days until Sissy accepted Millie. #CatsOfMastodon

  9. #SissyCat and #MillieCat enjoying breakfast together. It's been a hard week with shelter cat Millie joining the family. #CatsofMastodon

  10. 2/ Today was easier. #SissyCat was always a free feeder. That ended Thursday after Sissy went to bed.

Yesterday, the only time she got food was when #MillieCat was in the room.

We fed them small portions a half a dozen times per day.

At one point, Mellie went up to Sissy, who was laying on the yoga mat with me and were nose to nose, and just as they were about to get affectionate, Penny's cake timer, the old fashion kind with the loud bell, went off like a loud bell and scared the crud out of all four of us... Talk about timing. Literally, an inch away from each other.

Sissy heard Millie purring earlier in the visit and that seemed to do something to her in a positive way.

  11. #SissyCat and #MillieCat

Sissy is not taking to having a newbie in the house.

We are still having to isolate Millie to the "cat room" and let them be in the same room for a while together. We're spending time with her. She has really taken to me.

Sissy is being such a witch.

It's going to take patience and time. It's only been three days.

I feel bad for Millie. She is ready to be out all the time now.

Sissy even hisses at us if she smells Mellie on us.

    Advice?

  12. 3/ Night One: #MillieCat is spending her first night in segregation in the "Cat room" as she gets used to her new home and family. Mostly, her choice. She does love petting, scratches, and purrs.

She took a cat nap with her head in my hand but that was as far as she would go.

She finally took treats from my hand and played with a little plush toy with me. I kept dropping the treats in front of her 2 or so inches further each time until we were nose to nose almost. When I was petting her, after the treats, she did a roll and body flip to tell me where to scratch.

Penny and I are covering ourselves with her scent and after 8 hours or so, #SissyCat no longer hisses at us. lol. We also are swapping the toys out.

Millie cleaned one of Sissy's plushies and feathers and #SissyCat cleaned a plushie and a feather that Millie played with.

She is missing the shelter. There, she was the queen. #CatsOfMastodon #Cats

This would be easier if Millie would just let us get an FBI background check for her review. She is making us earn it.

When we got Sissy, she came in, got out of the cage, the late #LittleBit hissed at her, she slapped him, and all was well with the world. 😸

  13. @Jason844 Right now, #SissyCat is hissing at her shadow. lol. I am getting extra leg rubs. Sissycat is getting extra love so she doesn't feel left out. Meanwhile, Millie has found a nice place to observe us from while she decides if we are acceptable accomadations. lol. #MillieCat

We have bonded a little, on her terms.

  14. 2/ Today, Millie Vanillie, the oldest cat in the shelter, nearly 8 years old, has come to live with us and share her life with us.

Millie is the second rescue from the shelter. We have #SissyCat, adopted in September of 2021, and now #MillieCat

Millie spent more than 4 years at the shelter and was there when Sissycat was.

Penny and Millie know each other because since 2021, Penny normally goes to the shelter once per week just to socialize with the cats for an hour or so.

    From the Humane Society:
"Congratulations to the sweetest old gal in town, Millie Vanillie 👏🐾

Today was a very special day for Millie. Today is her adoption day, making her the newest family member to a very loving family. They are so excited to bring Millie into their lives and we can’t wait to see what life brings her way. Millie was our oldest cat resident, leaving shortly before her 8th birthday.

    Congratulations Millie! 🐾🙏👏"
