Some of my books are old friends. Clearing off an office file cabinet, I found one of them, since replaced. I probably bought it at Adamene's Book Fair, the used-book store in Somerville, NJ, whose stamp remains almost as clear as the publisher's print. I lived there for my first year or two of grad school, 1975-1976. Naturally, the paperback is disintegrating. A dear friend gave me a newer used copy some years back, knowing how much I like these stories. Still, I couldn't discard it. The stories may not describe terribly sensible people; the pages themselves, though, are quite unglued.
But it's still readable! I feel toward it somewhat the way I feel about the t-shirts embroidered by a safety organization for which I volunteered over 25-some years. When the tees become unwearable, will I toss them, or throw them in the rag bag? I think I'm sane enough to do so. Books, though, I find much harder to toss in a recycle bin. (I do realize tyhis will be the fate of most of my professional library after I die.) -
