  1. WP Engine wins an injunction against Matt Mullenweg and Automattic. This means they are forced to bring things back to the status quo, remove that stupid checkbox, and the hijacked ACF plugin.

Perhaps, it's time for Matt Mullenweg to resign... and give WordPress back to the community and make it a community led project instead of something that he can use for his benefit only.

This is good news for the WordPress community.

  2. CW: Wordpress Drama - BlackRock marks down Automattic valuation by 10%

This is in addition to the 50% markdown that BlackRock did earlier. I guess Matt is in the FAFO phase of his pointless war on WP Engine.

  3. CW: WordPress Drama - Judge looks like it’s in favor of granting the injection against Automattic, which WP Engine requested.

Big L for Matt Mullenweg, the judge plans to put an injunction against Automattic/Matt Mullenweg, thus they have to restore everything back to the status quo before Matt waged war against WP Engine. Not too surprising since WordPress itself is tied to WordPress.org resources.

  4. CW: WP Drama - Automattic decides to pirate ACF Pro, make it their own.

I just don’t see how this will help their case against WP Engine as they basically stole the plugin and make it their own,

  5. CW: WP Drama - The reason Matt’s motion to dismiss got rejected.

I have been a bit busy and I haven’t covered any WordPress drama stuff lately. Apparently the reason Automattic’s motion for dismissal got rejected is that WP Engine updated their complaint, with more stuff. It also mentions that tracker site that Matt put up.

  6. CW: WP Drama - Paid Jetpack Anti-spam subscription expiring, why I’m not renewing it.

As of tomorrow, my paid Akismet plan is done. I'm not renewing it because of Matt Mullenweg's disgusting behavior and of course his burning down the WordPress community in his stupid war with WP Engine.

I may reconsider if he resigns or he loses, but I think the focus should be to begin decoupling from Automattic plugins.

  7. CW: WP Drama - Cloudflare blocks Matt’s WP Engine Tracking site for Phishing.

Cloudflare blocks Automattics WP Engine tracking or Phishing.

This is funny, and it seems that this move backfired on Matt's face, although it's back online after a few hours.

  8. CW: WP Drama - Automattic trying to give 10K to migrate WPEngine to Pressable, possible conflict of interest

Remember Automattic trying to give incentives to lure WP Engine customers into Pressable to pay off their contracts.

Now they plan to give incentives to agencies that use WP Engine to move over to Pressable, an Automattic company.

I wonder, where are they getting all this money to burn for this, given that BlackRock cut their valuation in half.

  9. CW: WP Drama - Matt creates a website that tracks WP Engine let WPE, but contains local and staging domain information.

Automattic of course is trying to shoot inself in their foot by creating a website that tracks how many domains left WPE, whicn includes a downloadable CSV that contains local and staging sites, ripe for abuse from bad actors and possibly violating GDPR.

Yep, Matt is basically giving more ammunition for WP Engine to use against him.

  10. CW: WP Drama - WP Engine’s response to Automattic’s/Matt’s Opposition to their Motion for Preliminary Injunction

Apparently, right on time, WP Engine reponds to Automattic’s contradictions (of course) that Matt/Automattic is not harming WP Engine, despite admitting that they are by the actions they already did.

If you are not aware, Matt went on a crusade against WP Engine and they did the following:

    • Shut off WordPress.org access (Plugins/Themes/updates) from WP Engine and disabled WP Engine’s ability to update plugins
    • Try to steal customers away and entice them to move to Pressable, an Automattic service, which is a conflict of interest
    • That checkbox
    • Hijacking ACF to SCF.

I find it funny how WP Engine mentions that WordPress.com has a very low rating on Trustpilot at 1.8 out of 5. Part of it is because WordPress.com is basically a butchered “knockoff” of WordPress without the core features like the ability to use plugins and themes, without paying for a more expensive plan.

That said, Matt’s talking points are well, you know disproven given his actions and outright admitting to it.

I think this is a shut case against Automattic as they are obviously struggling financially. With BlackRock cutting Automattic’s valuation by 50%, Matt has no choice to try to extort WP Engine because WordPress.com is a crappy WordPress host (everyone should really host WordPress on their own host or pay for managed WordPress, and not use anything Automattic) while putting Jetpack features, that used to be free behind a very expensive paywall. Not only that, they are forcing people to pay for stats, even for a non-profit, which is another form of extortion/ransom.

It’s Matt case to lose. Hopefully Matt will get ousted as a result, or the community decides to hardfork WordPress. Matt has done a lot to destroy WordPress, but it still can be saved.

  11. CW: WordPress Drama - Matt brags about download numbers while WordPress community is in turmoil.

As expected, Matt continues to drive WordPress into the ground as people are pulling plugins because he highjacked ACF to make it into his butchered version called SCF.

While Matt has to contends with 200 people leaving Automattic, people losing trust in the WordPress community, and even going so far to consider alternatives, what does he do?

Of course, he bullies women (e.g. the leader of AspirePress, which is led by a woman), continued attacks on WP Engine, and of course... bragging about WordPress and plugin/themes download numbers.

This should be a textbook example on how not to manage an open soruce project.

  12. CW: WordPress Drama - Matt/Automattic responds to Preliminary Injuction

As expected, it’s a load of crap… and he just outright admits that Automattic is funded by a VC?

    :miffy_think:

Should be curious to see how WP Engine reponds

    gist.github.com/adrienne/aea9d

    Also.

Matt: The filing also talks about how WPE “exploited” the free resources offered by .org to turn a profit.

Also Matt: Let’s disable the ability to install plugins and themes on WordPress.com unless users pay for the more expensive Business plan to use it… and the plugins and themes come from WordPress.org of course at a profit!

    Also…

Because WP Engine’s inability to show any harm attributable to Defendants—let alone irreparable harm—is fatal to WP Engine’s Motion, Defendants address this issue upfront.

Also Matt: Brags about all the harm he did to WP Engine on the Techcrunch interview.

Plaintiff WPEngine (“WP Engine”) insists this case is about protecting the WordPress community. That is undoubtedly correct. But, contrary to the allegations in WP Engine’s Complaint, the perpetrator responsible for the harms against the WordPress community is not Automattic or Matt Mullenweg (“Matt”)

The funny thing, Matt did more damage to the WordPress community than what WP Engine ever did… like hijacking ACF and putting his butchered up “fork” or say, theft of ACF and make it “Secure Custom Fields.” Also, banning people who don’t agree with him, that checkbox, among other things.

Oh, this doesn’t mention the confusion of WordPress.com, which is a a knockoff of WordPress.org that they overcharge to have the privilege to use plugins and themes.

Matt is a tyrant and a bully and he needs to go.

  13. CW: WordPress Drama - Automattic/WordPress financials not looking good

This can explain why Automattic is going after WP Engine and why Jetpack prices are going up. Automattic, despite Matt’s denial saying that they are breaking even is losing money. It’s evident with BlackRock’s markdown of Automattic.

Earlier this year, Blackrock, one of the investors in Automattic, marked down their investment to almost half the value from the time they bought the shares in 2021. While Mullenweg didn’t directly address that markdown, he said the company generates around half a billion dollars in annual revenue, running at “break even or better,” and hiring aggressively.
“We haven’t raised any primary capital and have no plans to,” Mullenweg said.

    techcrunch.com/2024/10/30/matt

As they say, everything VC touches turn to crap. If you are using WordPress.com, you should absolutely move to your own hosting, or get managed hosting from somewhere like SiteGround/WP Engine/Flywheel, etc

  14. CW: WordPress Drama - Matt admits that Automattic is very short staffed from TechCrunch Disrupt 2024

Matt in his recent interview mentions that he is short staffed with the head count now at 1700.

Well, Matt f**cked around and now he is finding out. Now he is facing more consequences as more people pull plugins off WordPress.org and possibly do a hard fork in the future.

Apparently, the alternate domain, bullenweg, com is suspended.

The bullenweg.com domain no longer resolves; investigation indicates that the registrar (Porkbun) has suspended it. There is speculation that Mullenweg threatened Porkbun with legal action, as the content does not seem to be in violation of any of Porkbun's Terms of Service.

  17. CW: WordPress Drama - Paid Memberships Pro left WordPress.org Repo because of the SCF thing, Matt Threatens to do the same to this plugin

I’m not too surprised as I have said as Matt will surely go after other hosts and plugin/theme developers for WordPress, not just WP Engine.

The developer of Paid Memberships Pro pulled their plugin from the WordPress Org repo because they don’t trust Matt after he hijacked ACF with SCF. Now, Matt is threatening to do the same.

Two days after we closed the Paid Memberships Pro listing in the .org repository, Matt sent a direct message to me (Jason) on the WordPress.org Slack Workspace threatening to “take over your listing and make it a community plugin like we did to ACF”.

  18. CW: WordPress Drama - Automattic responds to WP Engine’s Legal Motion

Automattic responds giving this statement, which is hypocritical

Earlier this week, Automattic and photomatt responded to a motion filed by WP Engine. This dispute is occurring because private-equity-backed WP Engine expects to continue receiving free access to Matt’s website WordPress.org while threatening the WordPress community through its actions.

The hypocrisy is that Matt is doing the same by.. well, blocking their access, hijacking the ACF plugin with their botched version called “Secure Custom Fields,” putting that checkbox to prevent people from working on WordPress, thus locking out the accessibility team. Not to mention, banning people who don’t agree with him and even squashing dissent.

Not to mention, 159 people left Automattic due to Matt’s toxic behavior and done a lot more to ruin the WordPress community, because he can’t get his way.

I bet the legal response he gave is full of BS.

Matt Mullenweg needs to resign, or WordPress will eventually hard fork. We know that Matt controls WordPress, and it won’t be the last. Automattic is in financial trouble according to Kellie Peterson, which is why Matt is going on this crusade to get money out of WP Engine. I bet it won’t here, but he will target others to get money out of them.

That is while Jetpack features that used to be free get limited or put behind an expensive paywall.

Not to mention, WordPress, Automattic, and Matt are funded by BLACKROCK… which is a VC, right? Anything that VC touches eventually turns to crap.

The silver lining is, WordPress is open source, and it can Hard Fork, if the community had enough and decides to do so and get behind it.

  19. CW: re: WordPress Drama - WordCamp Central wants control of WordCamp event accounts

Here is a statement Kellie Peterson made about WordPress Community Team seizing control of WordCamp social accounts

Another example of Matt Mullenweg and automattic stifling the freespeech of the community. Automattic employees and mouthpiece Felipe Santos demanding that wordcampsyd delete tweets related to wpengine being removed as a sponsor. Failing to comply will result in the removal from the organizing team. Then a follow up demanding control of all socials from a wide swath of sizable WordCamps under the guise of continuity planning. Why, after all this time is this suddenly a concern!? Timing sure seems sus. Could it be to ensure that Matt’s loyalist can censor feeds?

    xcancel.com/kellie/status/1850

    Remember…

Matt Mullenweg: WP Engine is violating my free speech.

Also Matt Mullenweg: It's time to threaten legal action against Bullenweg.org. Bullenweg is a part of Automattic. They are making me look bad, time to take their site down.

Also Also Matt Mullenweg: These WordCamp accounts are saying bad things about me.. Time to seize control so they can’t say anything about my pointless crusade against WP Engine!

  20. CW: WordPress Drama - WordCamp Central wants control of WordCamp event accounts

Yep, more dictatorial control as there are reports from deddit that the WordPress Community Team wants control of WordCamp social media accounts because they mentioned WP Engine and they the posts deleted that mention WP Engine or step down. They also want control of all the accounts as well, possibly to squash dissent.

I'm reaching out about some issues with the WC Sydney Twitter/X account.
While reviewing interactions on X/Twitter, we found that your account has posted multiple tweets about WP Engine from the official WordCamp Sydney account that don't align with the Community team's view.
When posting from an official WordCamp account, your team is representing both the event and the Community team.
We understand each contributor will have different feelings about this case, and you are free to share your support and comments for WP Engine on your personal social media accounts, but these should not happen on official accounts.
With that in mind, I request that you follow these steps:

    1. Please delete the following tweets:
    2. We would also like you to share the account access/password to the wordcampsyd X account. You can generate a link throughquickforget.com/ with the password and send the link to this email. Please disable any 2FA for now.

I also want to highlight that if you do not comply, you will need to step down from the organizing team. This is a basic expectation for our team and something we would like to see for all our official accounts
We sincerely appreciate your contribution! Please feel free to get back to us if you need any help.

  21. CW: QT: WordPress Drama - Matt Mullenweg's Hypocrisy when it comes to "Free Speech"

Matt Mullenweg: WP Engine is violating my free speech.

Also Matt Mullenweg: It's time to threaten legal action against Bullenweg.org. Bullenweg is a part of Automattic. They are making me look bad, time to take their site down.

In short, Matt Mullenweg is upset when his "free speech" gets violated when it comes to the consequences of his bad behavior, but if someone else points out all his terrible behavior, no, this person can't have free speech, need to silence them.

Matt Mullenweg is a hypocrite. Matt needs to resign.

  23. CW: WordPress Drama - Matt Mullenweg threatens legal action against Bullenweg’s creator, creator takes down website. (But old content still exist in the repository)

It appears that Matt Mullenweg doesn't like all the facts that are negative against him reported on one site, thus he decided to take legal action. With that, the owner took Bullenweg down.

This really shows at Matt is a bully, but we all know that. Of course he doesn't know that the Streisand effect will come to bite him in the end, right?

Bullenweg.com is no longer available following threats of legal action from Matthew Mullenweg.

Platforming the claims in the lawsuits, in particular, is shaky ground. I encourage you to read this article:

    vulture.com/article/piers-morg

It is important to me to know who is behind Bullenweg, and I believe the legal system provides ample opportunities to do so. That will take a few weeks, or if you reveal yourself now we can discuss next steps.

I guess the threats were true, which really show Matt's true nature.

  24. CW: WordPress Drama - Matt tries to pay someone to create a Dis-track against WP Engine.

This is plain weird behavior from Matt Mullenweg. He apparently tries to pay someone to make a dis-track against WP Engine… and the person refused, according to Kellie Peterson, a former Automattic employee who is outspoken against Matt’s behavior when he started the drama against WP Engine

You cannot make this shit up. Matt Mullenweg tried to spend $500k+ to get kendricklamar to record a WP Engine dis track. Excellent use of investor money right there folks.

  25. CW: WordPress Drama - WP Engine’s motion to speed up case has been granted.

    From the court ruling:

The Court, having considered WPEngine, Inc.’s (“WPE”) Administrative Motion for an Order to Shorten Time (“Motion”) as to a hearing on WPE’s Motion for a Preliminary Injunction (the “PI Motion”), Dkt. 17, and good cause appearing therefore, hereby GRANTS the Motion and ORDERS as follows:

    1. Defendants’ Opposition to the PI Motion shall be filed on or before October 30, 2024;
    2. Plaintiff’s Reply shall be filed on or before November 4, 2024;
    3. The PI Motion is hereby set for hearing on November in Courtroom 3, 3rd Floor of the Oakland courthouse. 26 , 2024, at 10:30 a.m.

  26. CW: WordPress Drama - Automattic’s response to preliminary injunction request.

So, Matt Mullenweg finally filed a response to the prelimary injunction sent on Friday. I find this pretty halarious.

Rather than being about access to WordPress software, this case instead is about WordPress.org – a website owned and run by Defendant Matt Mullenweg individually, for the benefit of the community he loves.

In doing so, WP Engine gambled for the sake of profit that Mr. Mullenweg would continue to maintain open access to his website for free.

    Source:
    bullenweg.com/#describes-build

So, it’s a mistake for other people who sell plugins or themes for WordPress, a mistake to build websites on WordPress as a business or even use it? After all, if you get Matt angry, he will try to ruin your livelihood.

The fact that the API calls are hard coded to wordpress.org for core/theme/plugin updates and the news widget, that spread propaganda from Matt Mullenweg against WP Engine shows that there is a promise for free access to WordPress.org, or otherwise the software doesn’t function properly.

I doubt Matt will get his way to try to block the injunction, WP Engine will probably get it granted, and Matt’s words, especially that “free speech” remark will bite him later on.

Too long, didn’t reed: Matt doesn’t care about the WordPress community and WordPress.org is his thing to play around with.

  27. CW: WordPRess Drama - Matt claims that WP Engine is violating his First Amendment rights

Matt is at it again, claiming that WP Engine is attacking his “free speech” in a recent blog post on his personal blog.

WP Engine has filed hundreds pages of legal documents seeking an injunction against me and Automattic. They say this about community or some nonsense, but if you look at the core, what they’re trying to do is ask a judge to curtail my First Amendment rights.

Sure, Matt can say that WP Engine is Cancer and other false claims, but defamation (Libel and Slander) against an individual or a company is not free speech. Not to mention, he changed the code of conduct in an attempt to silence Matt Mullenweg’s terrible behavior.

Pro tip: Stop digging even deeper, also resign too.
