More #MastoTrees
An ornamental Japanese Maple (acer palmatum) sporting an enticing orange in my neighborhood.
The German Poet Marion Poschmann made me look at fall colors anew. I've always been a fan, but her essay "Laubwerk" on the poetics of city trees in which she talks about how we look at trees and what makes them difficult and so worthy of writing about, not only made me look closer but had a big part in starting my research on #MakingKinWithTrees

Here we go. I love #Mosstodon and to make this a proper forest, I want #MastoTrees to become a thing, too. I'll try to remember to post it together with #MakingKinwithTrees
Here's my old neighbor the hugging oak. Makes me happy everytime I meet them. Do you have favorite #trees in your neighborhood?

Cedar rust galls on a cedar tree near my old place. Should've knocked them all off,I guess. The yard across the street has Apple and crabapple trees, so this #fungus must be doing pretty well for itself.
Cracked open, it's clear these aren't any kind of seed-the texture is uniform and a little spongy.

I found an #OsageOrange #MastoTrees
This tree is next to a road in an area that has only recently been developed, so there's still a lot of native plants and trees (they're doing their best to eliminate those, though 😢)
I spotted it from the road a couple days ago and went back today. The really aged fruit had rolled down the road about 50', the two spotted green ones were windfalls already, and the bright green fell when I shook a branch

Thank you for viewing my #mastotrees . I'm sorry my yard is a big mess!

Last pic until budding and leafing out it done. Here are twin Hollies marking the corners and a tall boy in between. He is rather hidden by the oak up front, but does a good job of reducing the mowing I have to do on this side. Not sure if Maple/elm/sweet gum -

This fine lad is a baby tulip tree growing on the fenceline. The fence isn't an ideal place, especially since this will overlook my garden plot exactly, but I love tulip trees so much that I can't bring myself to prune him without a replacement started. My neighbors have an immense tulip tree in their yard, so I shouldn't be lacking for starts. -

I feel conflicted about this. This was, at you can tell, an absolute unit that used to dominate the backyard. One of the decisions we made when we bought this house was to cut it down because otherwise there wouldn't be enough sunlight to garden. It still tries to take its revenge by sprouting from the roots, which from all appearance underlay most of the backyard.
It's not a decision I'm proud of, but that's why I'm telling you all about it. -

The sweet gum that dominates the backyard. We're going to have a love/hate relationship with this one for sure. The shade is wonderful, but the back deck was completely covered in gumballs when we moved in and the roots sprout like crazy. The color is pretty good in Autumn, though. -

Not sure what this one is, but it's good for climbing. I've gotten pretty high up in it. Also, some squirrels have taken up residence after their route into our attic was closed up. -

We have a corner lot, and this (Iirc?) Maple/elm holds down court. I've got her roots covered with leaves because they seem prone to sprouting. You might be able to see the new buds on the tips of each branch -

This is the biggest tree in my yard, an oak. Definitely controls the front
