1000 Day Album Challenge (#35) Marvin Gaye: Super Hits (1970) [04.02.24]

and a love like mine, yeah baby / is something nobody can ever destroy…

this was the album that made me a Marvin Gaye fan. I bought it during my college years. I’m not sure how I got clued into this particular compilation, but I’m glad I did. scanning his discography I think this has all of his essential non-duet singles from the sixties. I didn’t see anything that I would consider an obvious miss.

I certainly knew and loved I Heard It Through the Grapevine as well as a few of the other tunes included on Super Hits. I’m gonna discuss the songs that I fell in love with, but am pretty sure I didn’t know until I bought this album. I will bet when all is said and done with the 1000 Day Album Challenge that albums I bought between 1979 and 1989 will dominate any other ten year period.

there were four key songs for me – Pride and Joy, Can I Get A Witness, Hitch Hike, and Baby Don’t You Do It. I couldn’t get enough of them. had I heard them before I certainly hadn’t remembered or hadn’t connected with them. The Stones covered both Can I Get A Witness on their debut (Album #13) and Hitch Hike on Out of Our Heads (another likely entry). The Velvet underground also nicked the guitar riff for There She Goes Again from Hitch Hike.

I was unfamiliar with it at the time, but The Band did a fantastic version of it. I know when I have posted Marvin’s version on Facebook before a number of friends thought that The Band’s version was the one they knew and preferred it. for me, I give Marvin the nod but The Band is at their absolute funkiest on their take.

as much as I’m fan of a number of Marvin’s seventies studio albums and of course, Midnight Love (1982), Super Hits remains my go to choice.
