Musical Interlude: Now for something fun. The 1941 film HELLZAPOPPIN is criminally unknown, largely because confusion over the rights has prevented a DVD release and restoration. But it was a movie way ahead of its time, an anarchistic, self-referential comedy more in line with the Warner Bros cartoons, Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, the films of Mel Brooks, and Police Squad! and its ilk. You can find it on Youtube and it's worth hunting down, if nothing else for one of the best dance scenes ever filmed...but this is not that scene. Here we have a YOUNG Martha Raye (remember her?) doing a good job with a swing tune.

Martha Raye (1916-1994) was born on this date.
At the 41st Oscars in 1969, she became the first woman to receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
“I want to join the world in acclaiming her contribution to the morale of our fighting men,” presenter Bob Hope said of a woman who entertained troops in WWII, Korea and Vietnam.
