Here they are! It is indeed an immature (California) red-shouldered hawk, so quite probably the one I saw here 10/3, then a lifer.
Two shots to show the distance between them and the context at the wetlands lake, and then single shots so you may assess the queenfisher's respective wary stink-eye and the hawkling's attempted insouciance for yourself.

I must say, having to choose between trying to photograph the trio of purple martins in flight OR the green heron upsetting a young kingfisher by perching too close…is my favorite kind of problem. The kind of problem I’d like to become adroit at handling!

When I went birding this weekend, there were 6 great egrets at the marsh. They were all on breaks from fishing, so I photographed various forms of egret hijinks!
