SWANSEA: Maritime Quarter flats evacuated after fire fills properties with smoke

Smoke filled a flats complex in Swansea as a fire prompted an evacuation of the property. Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended Burrows Chambers in the Maritime Quarter of Swansea on Saturday morning.

The building was evacuated and the fire service spent just over an over at the scene bringing it under control using four hose reel jets among other specialist equipment.

It is unknown what the cause of the fire was.

A spokesman for the fire service said:

“At 7.44am on Saturday, April 11, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Swansea Central, Swansea West, Port Talbot and Morriston fire stations were called to an incident at Maritime Quarter in Swansea.

“The crews responded to a fire within a ground floor flat. Crews utilised four breathing apparatus sets, four hose reel jets and four thermal imaging cameras to extinguish the fire.

“All occupants from the building were evacuated, with smoke affecting some neighbouring flats. Crews left the scene at 8.50am.”

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service has said it is “committed to delivering the best possible service for communities.”

Sale of iconic Swansea hotel comes amid major regeneration plans for seafront

The 121-bedroom hotel, which was built in 1989 as part of the first wave of the Maritime Quarter’s regeneration, is being marketed for the first time by specialist property adviser Christie & Co.

The sale comes as Swansea Council pushes forward with ambitious plans to redevelop the adjacent Civic Centre site, which includes the potential for a new hotel. Another new hotel is also proposed for a site next to the Swansea Arena and LC, with Swansea Council actively marketing the opportunity for an operator to build and run a 150-bedroom hotel with a rooftop bar on land between the two venues.

The Delta Hotels by Marriott has been a fixture of the Swansea cityscape since the late 1980s, when the former South Dock was transformed into the residential and leisure area seen today. It has a long history of hosting celebrities, including Swansea-born actress Catherine Zeta Jones and her husband Michael Douglas in 2001, and has been the go-to base for numerous visiting sports teams.

The hotel underwent a significant, multi-million pound refurbishment which was completed in 2023 and has operated under a new franchise agreement since May 2025.

Jeremy Jones, Head of Brokerage – Hotels at Christie & Co, said the recent development in the Swansea region had increased demand for high-quality hotel accommodation.

He commented: “The Swansea region has undergone substantial development in recent years across the commercial and educational sectors. This has increased demand for high quality hotel accommodation which the Delta Hotels Swansea meets.”

The sale is of the long leasehold for an undisclosed sum. The hotel itself is not closing — Delta Hotels by Marriott will continue to operate under its franchise agreement with any new owner. The sale presents a new chapter for the building as the area around it prepares for another wave of major transformation, including the potential for new competitors in the local hotel market.

Swansea man jailed after attacking neighbour so severely he needed his face reconstructed

60-year-old Paul Wiggins attacked his neighbour, Paul D’Urso with a wooden chair leg before kicking and stamping on him during the assault, which took place on 3 November last year.

Swansea Crown Court heard that the feud between the two men, along with another friend, 48-year-old Paul Matthews, started over D’Urso refusal to lend money to Wiggins drinking a drinking session at Wiggins’ flat.

Following the assault, D’Urso was taken to hospital where he was encouraged to report the attack to police. Wiggins and Matthews were both arrested, however Wiggins was subsequently released.

Angry at his arrest, Wiggins then attacked D’Urso again two days later on 5 November, striking his face repeatedly with a metal ball inside a long sock.

D’Urso required hospital treatment for facial reconstruction after the second attack including jaw realignment and a metal plate in his face. 

Swansea Crown Court was read a victim statement from D’Urso in which he said he was “left… feeling like a different person” following the incident.

D’Urso said in his statement: “I’ve lost all confidence. I was an outgoing and independent person. I cared for my mother who is blind. Now I feel I can’t look after myself and I fear I can’t look after my mother.

“At night when drifting off to sleep I’m startled by noises, thinking I’m going to be attacked again. I’m living in fear. Mr Wiggins lives within 200m of my flat and I’m scared he might try and harm me again.

“My teeth were knocked loose and my back teeth were cracked. I now find it too painful to wear dentures and my speech is unclear. I’m struggling to remember what day it is.

“I was of the belief I was going to die. I have children and grandchildren who need me and these attacks nearly took me from them.”

Wiggins changed his plea to causing grievous bodily harm with intent from Not Guilty to Guilty earlier this month, and has now been sentenced to five years and five months in prison. He has also bee issued an indefinite restraining order preventing him from approaching D’Urso in any way.

Sergeant Mark Bateman, from South Wales Police said: “Paul Wiggins’ violence went way beyond a simple disagreement. For him to use an everyday object as a weapon like this shows that he intended to cause serious harm to his victim.

“That’s exactly what happened, with the victim’s facial injuries meaning that they had difficulty with both eating and talking for a good time following the assault.

“It is only right that Paul Wiggins goes to prison before he does this to anyone else.”
