Interesting link between Mann's Peeperkorn and Fontane's Stechlin. I did not know.
Lovely photo of the lake. I once walked all around Lake Stechlin, shortly after reunification. It's a rather large lake. I went in late November, out of season, no one else was there, the restaurant by the lake shuttered for the winter.
There is such emotional depth in the landscape to the North of Berlin.

The post below gives a link to a congenial stage reading of the book. The German actor Sven Walser read it in its entirety during the first covid lockdown, on the empty stage of Hamburg's Ernst Deutsch Theater. Half an hour per day, in 114 sessions. An inspired, fresh, authentic reading, and at the time a moving tribute to the urgency of the moment. Sven Walser died in 2023.

This is so good. Especially chart 2, at the top, showing the scaling of time by section of the book. Truly Illuminating.
The Magic Mountain grabbed me when I first read it as a young man, 40 years ago. It didn't let me go. Not a year passes where I don't engage with it. The novel that defines the modern deconstruction of self-finding keeps helping me find myself.
These charts offer a new perspective. Thank you, #LouisSuarez.
