Disorder and Early Sorrow (#German: Unordnung und frühes Leid) is a 1925 #novella written by #ThomasMann. It follows the fortunes of the Cornelius family through the perspective of Abel Cornelius (written in a third person narrative voice), a 47-year-old history professor at the local university, whose status in society was once highly respected but has diminished markedly. The Cornelius family is, in part, a reflection of Mann's own family. The novella explores the psychological.

A brief review by Peter Bradshaw of Paweł Pawlikowski's film Fatherland, showing at Cannes. I hardly ever go to the cinema any more, but I will make an exception for this film.
Thomas Mann had left Germany in 1933. In exile, he famously remarked "Where I am, there is Germany" --- the proud and bitter battle cry of a patriotic emigrant robbed of his home country. He never returned to reside again in the country that defined him and that he defined.
The film plays in 1949, when Mann makes an official visit to Germany, both the West and the East.
The review suggests that the film captures the melancoly of this emigrant writer's visit home, his political disillusionment, combined with the complex and sad family dynamics of the Mann family. Thomas Mann is played by Hanns Zischler, a remarkable actor whom I remember from the early Wim Wenders films.
