#makanapatoday Apam balik, the thick kind. I swear, I will stay in Malaysia purely for the food.

My favorite meals to cook are dishes you will never find at a restaurant. This is chopped chicken thighs with oyster sauce and frozen peas and carrots. Accompanied by an experimental white rice / bulgur wheat blend.
Skin-on thighs is key. I’ve made it without and it almost tastes dry.
The chicken chopping prep is quite a bit of work, but the cooking is all in one pan and is super easy to toss together.
One of my favorites growing up. I always go for seconds.

You’re craving pasta but you don’t deserve it.
Wilt half a head of cabbage sliced thin with some buttered shallots and mix your choice of cooked pasta in. This one’s casarecce.
Toss in miso pasta water mix. A hearty but still balanced meal for 500 calories and a few dollars.

- 1 shot espresso ☕️It has been a great week.

Accidentally made an INCREDIBLE taco salad.
All the basics — ground beef (85/15, I like fat), green leaf shrettuce, cilantro lime rice, pico, avocados, shredded Mexican cheese, and a cilantro lime dressing that really killed it.
It was so good I forgot to add heat 😂

A few weeks ago, @francisfuna and I went back to this 10-seater ramen joint along Maginhawa because he was craving for a bowl. There was nothing to write home about on my first try, but I was willing to give it another shot. So off we went.
We waited in line for more than 30 minutes (we normally don't), and I'm glad we did. This creamy bowl of crab ramen was worth the wait!

📍 karayama - shogayaki kara-age don (crunchy chicken in soy sauce and ginger with bean sprouts) 5⭐
📍 the giving cafe - buddha bowl (tofu and veggies in curry rice) if I will definitely get this again, but half rice and no egg
📍 cooper's - I forgot to take a photo but I really liked the flat white. their chocolate truffle cake was okay lang (mary grace is undefeated)

ube latte and quesong puti croissant. 😌 the ube latte wasn't well-balanced (too much ube, not enough espresso) so I can't recommend it. the croissant was FANTASTIC. sorry I've been MIA recently -- I was finishing my manuscript edits (already sent to the publisher!), applying for a residency, and putting together a sustainable clothing booth for a bazaar in late april. I'm also working on new stories and planning online content. very busy Q2 ahead!

5/n I mean... come on! So much good vegetarian food! The hotel made eggs to order and served kopi kosong. What more can a girl want? Congee was okay. Sad that there weren't many vegetarian toppings (and I don't like raw spring onion), but I'm not complaining!

I’m having a late lunch of nasi Padang in a vegetarian restaurant, and the German next to me clearly woke up and chose violence today, because he’s telling the restaurant owner that laksa is Indian, actually, so they’re not actually serving Singaporean cuisine.

I had a blast in London, feasting on laksa (so excited that I forgot to take a pic), hot teh tarik, prata planta with condensed milk, vegan nasi lemak, vegetarian char kway teow, kueh bingka ubi kayu, kueh salat and kueh dadar.
I couldn't go to all the restaurants that I wanted to visit because they weren't all open and I had very limited time, but I was very happy to at least go to Roti King at Euston station (https://maps.app.goo.gl/PGap2APC3JCxYcLh8), Rasa Sayang in China Town (https://maps.app.goo.gl/hMQxjYhDqNPbuGmU8) and Makan Cafe at Portobello Road (https://maps.app.goo.gl/6jfayYo8mXCaQZsj9). Would definitely recommend all of these places!
Roti King's prata was super crispy and indulgent, Rasa Sayang's nasi lemak was good, but I probably would order something else next time because I missed the crispy fried tempeh that I'm used to getting with vegetarian nasi lemak, and personally don't much like the vermicelli in the sayur lodeh. Their food tasted delicious, though, and I really liked their kueh bingka ubi kayu. Will definitely return to Makan Cafe. They have a great vegetarian selection, but I found out too late that I could've ordered sambal or chili on the side, and I want to try their nasi campur. Their kueh salat was super fresh, tender and delicious.

We seldom prepare red meat-based dishes at home, but when we do, we make sure they count. I just hope this pork adobo lives up to my husband's standard. He's the better adobo cook.

Belated raya posting:
Didn't make it in time to join my neighbourhood mosque's qurban/sacrifice list but my cousin's back in the east coast was still open so that's our home portion all the way from Kelantan via the highway, eheh. The rice is also kelantanese but mum made that (literally it's "rain on a sunny day rice" but it just means rainbow rice because in Kelate we don't quite describe the rainbow but the kind of day that causes it). Just like the other parts of coastal Malaya Arabian peninsula/Indian Ocean trade cuisine leaves remnants which in this case, the acar (we don't really do dalca or any of the dairy stuff to the vege salad, the acidity comes from vinegar).

Jarang makan di luar, tapi kalau pas perlu makan di luar, selalu cari lotek. Pokoknya dibandingkan gado-gado dan ketoprak, lotek lebih endess
Pengalaman selama ini lebih sering mampir lotek rumahan atau paling tidak warung lotek yang lapaknya kecil, lebih memuaskan. Yaa, meskipun sama-sama mengenyangkan, masing-masing warung punya kelebihan. Ada lontong atau nasinya lebih banyak, ada juga yang ote-otenya (potongan bakwan) lebih banyak. Ada juga yang air di bumbu kacangnya lebih banyak (alhasil bumbunya gak kental). Tapi saya lebih pilih yang sayurnya lebih banyak
Tadi baru aja nemu yang masing-masing bahan cukup imbang. Lontong, sayur, dan ote-otenya. Tapi harganya relatif lebih mahal: 15.000 (sudah plus jeruk hangat)
