My guess is that Apple never had a plan for additional hardware on the Mac Pro.
Personally, the lack of support for professional GPU (or anything else) made the Mac Pro just an more expensive Mac Studio.
#MacStudio is the future, and whatever comes next will be connected via #Thunderbolt5.
