Apple Reportedly Worked on Two 'Extreme' Chips

for the past year i've been running my mac pro trashcan with 12GB ram, assuming that it only came with three 4gb dimms. that's always been enough for me, so i never bothered to look at it more closely
last night i went to de-dust the interior, and noticed that there were four dimms installed! after swapping around dimms, it became clear: dimm slot #4 was not reading anything at all.
a few forum users reported exactly the same problem, and said that swapping the "cpu riser card" fixed the issue. the cpu riser contains both the CPU and RAM slots on a single card.
since i had a spare trashcan (that works perfectly), i stole the riser from that machine and transplanted it into my production machine.
swapping riser cards is a fairly involved procedure (took about an hour or two altogether). but on first boot, it immediately recognized slot #4.
now here's the interesting part: i also transplanted the *malfunctioning* cpu riser into my spare trashcan. to my absolute surprise, that machine also now recognizes all four dimm slots on boot!
i suspect one of two things happened
- the memory controller is integrated into the cpu itself. it's possible was some lint on one of the cpu pins causing it to ignore slot 4.
- the cpu is torqued down to the riser card using 8 bolts. it's possible one of the bolts wasn't correctly tightened, creating some pin disconnections.either way, i went from having 1.5 working trashcans, to 2 completely working trashcans today. was a neat learning experience.

I'm currently using the same model (Qwen3.6-35B-A3B-MTP-GUFF) across my three AI-capable machines: the #StrixHalo Asus PX13, the 2019 #MacPro with Vega 2, and the M2 Max #MacStudio.
The fastest one is ... Vega 2 with 32GB HBM memory. I'm reliably getting 60+ tokens per second, with the M2 Max trailing with around 45-50 and the Strix Halo last at around 35-40.

I put #Ubuntu 26.04 on a 2019 #MacPro (7,1) with a 32GB HBM2 Vega II GPU. It's surprisingly AWESOME for both gaming (current-gen AAA GOG games through Heroic Launcher run very very well) AND quite awesome at local AI. #Qwen35 getting nearly 80 tokens per second was really unexpected for this nearly obsolete box. All in all, silent and pretty good. Definitely runs better than MacOS.

From a graphics performance point of view, the Mac mini (M1, 2020) is roughly equivalent to a Mac Pro (D700, 2013). This is single GPU performance. The second D700 in the Mac Pro is just having a rest.
