Let me tell you a story: Paulita and Tachi

MARGARITA VAZQUEZ. Luz Violeta. Comunicadora Social, Escritora, Cuenta cuentos,
    COLUMNISTA

Deep in the ocean, where the water is a beautiful, clear blue, lived a lovely little whale who was very shy. She could be seen gliding among seabeds and beautiful, multicolored corals, always gazing in wonder at the colorful treasures of the underwater world.

As she swam, she encountered a school of sardines moving with the northern current; she paused to admire the amazing sight of the fish all lined up together.

Paulita looked closely and spotted a sea creature she had never seen before—wow! It was a small manta ray moving with extraordinary grace; it was simply fascinating! It glided through the currents, moving up and down, and she wondered, «Who is that? Does it fly or float? It looks like it has wings!» She had never seen movement quite like that, and she was utterly enchanted.

Ella se acercó suavecito y exclamo ¡oye! Yo soy Paulita, sabes ¡parece que tienes aaaalas! Te vez tan ligera que pareces volar ¿Cómo te llamas?

She approached gently and exclaimed, «Hey! I’m Paulita, you know… it looks like you have wiiiings! You look so light, it’s as if you’re flying. What’s your name?»

The manta ray stopped right then and smiled at her.

¡Hola!

«Hello! My name is Tachi, and I’m a manta ray. Thank you so much for such a lovely comment, Paulita. You’re a beautiful whale, and you’re admired by many of uuuus—did you know that?»

Paulita replied, «No, I only know that I’m very heavy. Even though I swim great distances and know the ocean currents well, I never would have guessed that. Hardly anyone stops to say hello because they think I’m going to eat them, but that’s not the case. I can see that you’re very special, Tachi,» and she smiled at her.

«Look,» Tachi replied, «it might be ordinary to you, but you are a truly beautiful and magnificent sea creature—and you’re always so kind to everyone.»

¡Somos irrepetibles!

Tachi continued, «Can I tell you something? You don’t need wings; you are very lucky. You lead a rich life in the deep and can discover a thousand secrets of the sea.» She smiled while moving gracefully. «You know, every creature has its own unique nature. Here’s something I love to say: We are one of a kind!»

Paulita smiled gratefully. «You’re right, my lovely, graceful friend. Whenever you like, I can take you along to see other beautiful parts of our vast marine habitat—like the red reefs. Just say the word, and I’d be happy to take you. Besides, with your manta ray shape and those fascinating movements, it really looks like you’re flying in an extraordinary way. It’s an honor to watch you glide so effortlessly through the water.»

Tachi smiled and replied, «Hehe… and we both love to chat, too—heehee.» «You’re right,» Paulita agreed.

Tachi emphasized, «I think we’re both lucky to live in this wonderful paradise called the ocean; meeting each other is a joy, too.»

Paulita nodded. «Living a fulfilling life in this wonderful paradise is a true treasure.» They both realized that each possessed different talents and a unique, magical way of swimming.

Paulita thanked Tachi for the lovely conversation and said, almost as a farewell, «It was a delight to meet you.» The manta ray smiled back and replied, «It is wonderful to fly with someone like you—someone so special. See you soon, Paulita.» «See you soon, Tachi.»

Then, they disappeared amidst the beautiful blue and gold reefs and the green seaweed of the sea.

Both realized that there had never been any envy—quite the opposite; there was admiration and respect for their differences. That is the true treasure: living in harmony with those who share your beautiful habitat.

Colorín colibrí este cuento termina aquí.

And so, this story comes to an end.

Let me tell you a story: The Duke of Don Crescencio

MARGARITA VAZQUEZ. Luz Violeta. Comunicadora Social, Escritora, Cuenta cuentos,
    COLUMNISTA

At Don Crescencio’s little farm, the animals woke up very early. He was delighted to feed them according to their species: sorghum, cracked corn, borage, and so on.

You could also see the red hen and her cute chicks, the rooster, and some turkeys ready to head to the watering trough, which was under the shade of a beautiful eucalyptus tree. There, some jet-black birds gathered, keeping them company; they even seemed to be talking amongst themselves.

But the other day, Don Patricio arrived very early, just as Don Crescencio was feeding his animals.

«Good morning, friend!» Don Patricio exclaimed. «How are you this morning, Don Patricio?» «Fine,» Don Crescencio replied, «I have some news: I’m going up north and I’m giving away my animals. But why are you leaving?» «Well, you see,» Don Patricio said. «Look, I have a beautiful peacock named Duke. I think he’s the most beautiful in the world, but he’s a little conceited, I must confess. But he has lovely colors,» he smiled a little.

«I would very much like you to keep him,» Don Crescencio said. «There’s plenty of room for ‘the Duke,’ but from now on he’ll be called Don Crescencio’s Duke, because he thought he was so handsome.»

«I’d really like you to keep him,» Don Crescencio said. Finally, that magnificent peacock climbed down from the truck, waddling with its beautiful, multicolored fan of feathers. When it opened its large, colorful plumes, the stunning emerald green was immediately visible. The moment it touched the ground, it began its proud stride toward the watering trough. Everyone on the farm was intrigued by Don Crescencio’s peacock.

He walked by strutting along, gesturing, «Look at me, I’m passing by!»—and inevitably everyone stared, especially the blackbirds that inhabited that beautiful landscape, captivated by the diversity of his striking iridescent colors. «Like something sculpted by the gods themselves!» they thought. He was quite arrogant.

Then a small blackbird tried to befriend him, but he didn’t even glance his way. «Yulito» gazed at him with admiring eyes. He sang sweetly and said, «Hey, Duke, you’re very handsome.» Yulito only briefly grimaced and continued on his way, as if he hadn’t even seen him. Everyone observed his behavior, and they didn’t like it. They saw his arrogance and his disdain for «Yulito.»

The duke simply wanted the admiration of all the little animals as he walked with his head held high, his gait majestic, but he wasn’t interested in speaking to the others, much less to a black bird—how arrogant! The next day, when he woke up and all the little animals went out to eat, nothing had changed. The little black bird tried again to be empathetic with him, but he didn’t even look at him. Proud and conceited, he scorned him once more! And he said, «Don’t come any closer, you’re very ugly, you’re just colorless black.» That little bird flew away sadly and looked at his reflection in the water trough. He was a jet-black ticus bird; he wasn’t ugly, he was just different from the duke.

Seeing that he had managed to upset «Yulito,» he smiled contentedly. «Go away, black bird!» he shouted. The haughty, boastful, and conceited duke continued his swagger under the gaze of the others. «You see my feathers, they’re emerald green! No one like me!» he declared.

The other animals didn’t understand his bad behavior. They decided to teach him a lesson and walked away without a word. The next day, «Don Crescencio’s Duke» woke up feeling very proud and noticed an odd silence. He went outside and spread out his fan of emerald-colored feathers. He raised his head and began his walk, showing off his feathers.

But… he found no one in his path. He muttered, «How strange,» and dragged his feathers on the ground to make more noise as he walked, but no one came out to see him.

He said, «Ah, I know, they’re at the watering trough!» and headed towards it, but all he found was emptiness and silence. No one was there to admire his emerald-colored feathers!

Then he heard the animals at another watering trough in the distance, all very happy, and he wanted to go there, but he couldn’t. They had put a fence around him so he would be alone, since he didn’t want to make friends and felt superior to the others.

While Don Crescencio fed his animals on the other side of the fence, enjoying the sight of that jet-black little bird that came down from the eucalyptus tree to keep him company, Don Crescencio said to little «Yulito,» «Look, little bird, appearances can be deceiving. Sometimes those who are beautiful on the outside aren’t always beautiful on the inside.»

From then on, they only called him the Duke. He was always alone, with his emerald-colored feathers, just for looking down on a little bird that was simply different from him.
