Tab Hunter’s role in “Lust in the Dust” originally was presented to Anthony Perkins, who turned it down to concentrate on his directing career. Also, Chita Rivera was to play Marguerita Ventura but couldn’t due to a previous commitment. Shelley Winters was considered before Lanie Kazan took the role. To be honest it’d be a VERY different film with any of them in those roles

Apparently, at some point John Waters was asked to direct but he passed on it due to his not having written the film. Openly gay actor, author and director Paul Bartel would go on to direct.

And, of course, our gun-toting cowboy is Classic Hollywood heartthrob actor, musician, author, rancher and producer Tab Hunter (July 11, 1931 – July 8, 2018). This was the second & final film he made with Divine (the first being John Waters’s 1981 “Polyester”)

Enter our leading lady: Divine (October 19, 1945 – March 7, 1988) a triple threat icon of Drag and Queer theater and cinema of the 1970s and 1980s, Divien is most known for her work as one of John Waters’s Dreamlander stable of performers. “Lust in the Dust” (1984) was one of the few films Divine made that wasn’t directed by John Waters.
