  1. Just as I dislike the 'books read' as a goal for reading, I think a single listen to a song should take in to account the runtime of a song.

Disclaimer: This toot is in no way inspired by listening to funeral doom at the moment.

  6. Needing to fell a tree in my garden last year and having had much lower level scares atop step ladders, reaching with chainsaw in one hand. I figured I'd do some research at the university of YouTube.

With 30+ hours of #arborist videos under my belt I successfully took down a 35m pine using negative rigging, some cheap Chinese static rope, a slightly too small climbing harness and a battery powered chainsaw from Aldi.

    I should have stopped there.

    But the algorithm!

YouTube knew my new obsession and fed me more.

I learned about moving or doubled rope technique (MRS/DRT/DdRT) and single or static rope technique (SRS/SRT) along with knots and hitches then gear.

I have too many hobbies so have spend wisely. Top brands are usually expensive, after all they have to recover the cost of advertising that makes you think they're the best so I bought Xinda and Cliwiz gear from China and now have more or less everything I need to enjoy some great recreational tree climbing, starting low and slow at first of course.

At 66 and still fairly fit, why shouldn't I?

  11. And that's the work BBQ in the smoker (circa 07:30), two halves of a lamb shoulder from across the drive, and 6.8kg of beef ribs. Hopefully that's enough, and hopefully it'll be done by 5pm. 😬

Starting out pretty well thanks to both the early start and I left the meat out from 11pm so it was ~12C to begin with.

Key factor will be how the "stall" treats me today, but if I don't open the door too much vs the need to keep the water in the bottom topped up as a moist environment is the stall's worst enemy! (Strat: top up less frequently with more watter per top-up, using fresh off the boil kettle water.)

  21. CW: Food - pigs feet

Pigs feet - Eisbein more or less - to go with the sauerkraut I made.

Low and slow for most of the day. Using the Taiwan Tatung rice cooker per my wife’s insistence (and free solar electricity instead of gas for the stove)

  34. And we got there....nearly 12 hours in the smoker.

Dinner was #lowandslow #smoked pork shoulder inna bun, and also on some #allotment potatoes. With a salsa made from allotment tomatillos and shallots, plus some of last year's fermented green chilli sauce. Some token-green leaves of New Zealand spinach make an appearance, plus some fried green beans.

    Now very full.

One day I will learn to actually start the smoking earlier.
