Data 9 stycznia 1928r. wiąże się z datą pierwszego, organizacyjnego zjazdu Ligi Ochrony Przyrody - najstarszej ekologicznej organizacji w Polsce.

II wojna światowa przerwała działalność ligi, ale stowarzyszenie odrodziło się 17 lipca 1945 w Łodzi. Pierwszym prezesem po wojnie był prof. Edward Potęga.

Głównym celem działalności LOP jest kształtowanie właściwych postaw człowieka przez ukazywanie bogactwa, piękna i znaczenia przyrody, budzenie jej umiłowania i poszanowania, szerzenie zrozumienia celów ochrony przyrody i środowiska oraz problemów i zagrożeń.
Straż Ligi Ochrony Przyrody prowadzi działania prewencyjne i interwencyjne w sytuacjach otrzymania zgłoszenia lub natrafienia na wykroczenia lub przestępstwa przeciwko przyrodzie.

Dzień Ligi Ochrony Przyrody przypomina niezwykle istotny fakt: wszyscy musimy dbać o przyrodę. To jest nasz obowiązek. W przeciwnym razie nasze następne pokolenia nie będą miały już możliwości żyć w warunkach środowiskowych jakie znamy. Dlatego nie tylko powinniśmy się włączać w akcje, ale przede wszystkim dbać o środowisko zaczynając od prostych czynności codziennych oraz dbania o nasze najbliższe otoczenie.

9 stycznia - Dzień Ligi Ochrony Przyrody 💚

Idea ochrony przyrody nie jest pomysłem XX ani tym bardziej XXI. Tradycja ochrony przyrody w Polsce sięga bowiem X wieku! Wtedy to pojawiły się pierwsze dekrety dotyczące ochrony gatunkowej zwierząt i roślin.

W XI wieku Bolesław I Chrobry ograniczył polowania na bobry. Za czasów Kazimierza Wielkiego zaczęto chronić nadmiernie wyniszczone lasy. Zygmunt III stanął w obronie zagrożonych wyginięciem turów, a Władysław Jagiełło wprowadził zarządzenie ograniczające polowania, a także wyręb i eksport drewna cisowego.
W 1347 roku ustanowiono Statut Wiślicki, ograniczający niekontrolowane wykorzystanie zasobów przyrody i wprowadzający kary za wyrąb dębów i innych drzew (w tym owocowych) w cudzych lasach. Statut ten jest uważany za najstarszy polski dokument dotyczący ochrony przyrody.

Świadomość konieczności ochrony przyrody wraz z upływem czasu wciąż wzrastała, a podejście do jej ochrony ewoluowało. Z czasem ludzie, których łączył wspólny cel jakim była ochrona przyrody, zaczęli zrzeszać się w ugrupowania, celem zyskania siły sprawczej w walce o zachowanie natury. Zaistniała potrzeba skupienia różnych organizacji działających dla ochrony przyrody.

W 1920r. powołano Państwową Radę Ochrony Przyrody, na której czele stanął wybitny polski przyrodnik, znawca Tatr, prof. Władysław Szafer. Zainspirowany prężnie działającą od 1909r. Szwajcarską Ligą Ochrony Przyrody, w 1923r. powziął zamiar utworzenia polskiej Ligi Ochrony Przyrody. Towarzystwa przystępujące do Ligi miały od każdego członka wpłacać niewielką, 30-sto groszową składkę. Dowodem wpłaty miał być znaczek Ligi, wklejany do legitymacji członkowskiej. Znaczek przedstawiał żubra, a jego autorem był Jerzy Hryniewiecki.
