Living in Japan means I use more pages in Japanese. This means I need them translated. Had to swap back from DuckDuckGo as it has no translate function. Back to Firefox. Left DDG installed as I love the app tracker blocker.

I also have apps for Japan that are only in Japanese. Looked into app translators but the permissions I have to give them in order to translate an app made me feel uncomfortable.

Google Translate is still the best for translating all the signs and menu pictures via camera. I have tried lots of others. Google Maps is also better than OSM where I live (also much easier to use IMO)

Not Applying for Japanese Citizenship

I’ve seen a few people online recently attain Japanese citizenship or begin the process of obtaining it. I admire their determination, rationality, and bureaucratic stamina. But my wife and I have both agreed it’s not in our family’s best interests. Her reasons and mine mostly overlap. Here they are in case anyone is interested.

I have permanent residency. I like having one foot in one country and one in another. I spend eleven months of the year in Japan, one month in the UK. That balance feels right. I can return to the country of my birth, revisit my past, catch up with family and friends, and then return home when I’m content. I also avoid the worst of the Japanese summer heat, although non-air-conditioned UK is also starting to feel like a sauna. There is a lot about the UK I do not miss.

But giving up British citizenship doesn’t feel right. Having to get an ETA to return to the UK would feel alien, especially while I have family there.

I also worry a lot about the future of Japan, and this is probably the biggest reason not to apply for citizenship. The demographics, the public debt, and the weakening yen scare me more than natural disasters do. So do the xenophobic tendencies that seem to be on the rise, especially within the government. I want an emergency exit for my family, even though I hope never to use it. I’m also aware that the current state of the UK isn’t really a beacon of prosperity and potential.

Which is why I’ve already applied for citizenship of the country of my grandparents. The paperwork was considerably less than the Japanese equivalent, which nowadays seems unreasonable for what it is. I had an EU passport until Brexit, a decision I had no vote in and still think was a stupid one. If the application succeeds I’ll regain one, which would be that emergency exit. It won’t pass to my daughter, but it would let her and my wife run through the door with me.

If all goes well I’ll have a British passport, an EU passport and Japanese permanent residency, with some doors open for my wife and daughter too. That’s a robust set of privileges that won’t leave me feeling boxed in.
