I started using it in 2008: its "TWKN" was still around, like in the UI, you could click and look at what everyone was posting.
I still call everything "the firehose" because of those days of Twitter. Even "liking" has its roots in favouriting there, saving tweets rather than tracking score. In its earliest days, sure, everyone was using it in some prompted manner such as "I just went to get coffee and the barista complimented my hair!"

But it hit a critical mass at some point.
    What did you see?
I had the what I call fortunate position of watching the #perl and #ruby communities "come of age" as it were, and get hit with the early social justice movements in technology. They ended up being polar opposites in their responses; Ruby became Code of Conductville, while Perl did all it could to maintain independence for the foundation, for the pumpkings, and for the developers themselves. The same didn't happen in the rooms for small niche languages like #LiveScript. Some language channels basically just died but for the rare question and the hangers-on idling, and that was long before freenode's drama.

Me, I love the firehose. But fedi doesn't have to be a firehose, it can be a local community's whatever-server, that happens to be able to communicate with other servers as well, in that way e-mail is a provided utility that happens to be able to communicate with everyone else's provided utility.
