Dead Can Dance – Spiritchaser (1996, Australia/UK)
Our next spotlight is on number 308 on The List, submitted by owlyph.
Originally founded in 1981 out of Australia’s experimental post-punk Little Band[1] scene (and, I suppose, New Zealand’s punk rock[2] scene) and then finding a home in UK’s goth scene, within a couple of albums Dead Can Dance found the lush, instantly recognizable sound that would make core duo Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry the Queen and King of neoclassical darkwave. And that sound – with Gerrard’s stunning vocals channelling the “abstract vocabulary that lies within the collective unconscious”[3] over the varied shiny sounds the pair had collected from all corners of the world like sonic magpies – is what we hear on this, their meditative seventh studio album and last release prior to their first hiatus (1998 to 2005). (It’s also the group’s first album released after Gerrard began her solo career, having just released her debut The Mirror Pool the previous year.)
And so, if you are familiar with any Dead Can Dance from about 1985 on, there will be no surprises here – you’re in for a chill, gorgeous ride around the globe. The weirdest thing about this album? Apparently one sound that might have been unconsciously collected is a short bit in the third track, “Indus”, which, due to blink-and-you’ll-miss-it similarity to The Beatles’ “Within You Without You” (from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band), the group was pressured into crediting George Harrison as a co-writer. As per Gerrard:
“We don’t know whether we stole it or not. We probably did, but who the hell knows?…It wasn’t deliberate, because we didn’t remember the record. I’m really unfamiliar with the Beatles’ work…musicologists are saying, ‘Oh, the first six notes are the same.’ So we had to contact George Harrison, who didn’t give a damn, frankly. He was gardening at the time. He said ‘Oh, I like that piece of music. It’s OK.’ But the [record company] pushed it, So we had to give credit to Harrison on the thing, which seems really bizarre.”[4]
And so, though we at 1001 Other Albums are known elsewhere on the Internets for not liking the Beatles,[5] I suppose with this spotlight I’m indirectly suggesting you also listen to a Beatles album. Because I don’t give a damn, frankly, and only wish someone will one day say of me in regards to a supposedly controversial moment: ‘they were gardening at the time’.

In the late 1980s, a relative sent me a mixtape. The first song was something off of Dead Can Dance's first album. Somewhere else on there was a song by Le Mystere de Voix Bulgares.
Today I found a link to a 2018 album by The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices and Lisa Gerrard, who is one of the founding members of Dead Can Dance. Not only that, but on the Bandcamp for this album, there's a note that Lisa Gerrard talked about how much the LMdVB influenced her singing technique when she first discovered them in the early 1980s.
I got to send this link to my relative, who is recovering from surgery, and who introduced me to both of these musicians nearly 4 decades ago.

According to Kit-T today's #TuneTuesday theme from Pixelcats is #NonLexicalVocals - songs with any of the do, do, dos, the la, la, las, the scats, yodels, dowops etc.
#LisaGerrard sings often non-lexical to get the right sound out of her vocals, which cannot be achieved otherwise when using words that actual would be not nonsensical. 'The Host of Seraphim' song of the group #DeadCanDance, where she's a part of together with #BrendanPerry, is I think an example of this:

Oh boy. Revisited a few songs by an old favorite. There are some songs by Lisa Gerrard that makes me choke up every time I listen to them even though she’s not singing any actual understandable words. It’s like pure emotion jacking in directly to my subconscious. The range. The power. The confidence. The constrained control. Kills me every time. Like this one.

From "Into the labyrinth", which was released 30 years ago (in September).I recommend it in particular if you have headphones or an immersive sound system.
I also recommend it to anyone suffering from the heat, because of the goosebumps it gives. -
