  1. Light Phone Continues to Fail QWERTY Test

I have read some articles about the Light Phone and other "minimalist" phones. As someone who wrote not one but two articles on my "ideal" phone concept (creative concept photography included), I am always interested in seeing new ideas in the space. I called for open source software, QWERTY keyboard, and an e-ink screen. The Light Phone, which seems to be one of the more oft-covered "minimalist" phones, checks the e-ink box, but not the other two. Does that change with the new Light Phone? […]

  2. @ruari Ahhh no way. A flip phone! I like. I like. But do I wanna drop $299 (+import tax) on the thing? 🤔

You have a light phone don't you? One of the earlier models?

  7. Ok so who’s reserving the LightFlip? Convince me to ditch my iPhone as my main phone.

  8. This is an adorable flip phone, unlocked, with great color choices, and good price.

I'll consider one, but I don't think I can do it due to various addictions. 😁

    I'll think about it.

I've done a lot of muting on my commercial social media feeds. That has helped so much. Maybe later, the mobile.

I'm focusing on real reading (of books!) now. Feels so good.

  9. Light Flip is a flip phone with minimalist design and features (plus a keypad and T9 predictive text)

The Light Flip is an upcoming cellphone that looks like an artifact from an alternate timeline where smartphones never took off. It has a class flip-phone design with a small screen on top and a number pad on bottom. And there’s a notification light on the cover, but no cover screen to distract you when the […]

  13. "Dumb Phones as Status Symbols" is on the @newyorktimes predictions for 2026. Asking "Who can afford to be less reachable?"

These things are less than 15 years old, it's funny how fast "convenience" becomes a trap. Tech that makes work faster can only ever be convenient in a world where few people own such a device.

  15. Okay. I have a month to pick out a new phone before I can no longer cancel my pre-ordered Light Phone 3. I really like my Light Phone 2, but living without a camera has been a little too limiting, and the folks in my life would really appreciate me at least getting that capability back. I am still bitter about losing the headphone jack, though.

But I'm starting to wonder if the issue isn't that smart phones do too much, and more just that smart phones are not something I can control. Plus, they all look boring.

There aren't a lot of open source phones out there that are super compelling, but if anyone has any thoughts or recommendations, or just weird niche mobile devices, I'd love to see them.

Kicking things off, I came very close to going even more minimal than the Light Phone when I found Sky's Edge Rotary Phone. I wanted this thing so bad, but folks in my life vetoed going that low-function pretty hard.

  20. Yesterday, my #lightphone III randomly switched to EDGE and stayed there. It never flipped back to 4G and I didn't notice anything was wrong until this morning.

  22. @omarchy So far the #Lightphone III has been ok for me but I have already hit some issues (that I could work around) and looking at their Reddit I am one of the lucky ones. Many have serious issues making it unworkable. So it is too buggy to recommend yet (maybe after some updates). It is also not a cheap device.

  24. So I use #Strava all the time.

I do not have a smartwatch and recently I have gone back to a basic feature phone (#Lightphone III), so no Strava app.

How am I handling this? Well…

    1. I note the time when I leave
    2. I note the time when I arrive
    3. I head to onthegomap.com and manually map my route from memory

Now I have start time and after and easy calculation in my head, duration. And the resultant map gives me both distance and elevation. Then I create a manual entry.

You know, in case anyone was curious about the camera on it. 🤷

  28. Ok, one thing I do like with the #Lightphone III is the settings you can enable to email you a copy of certain text messages. So messages that match certain criteria (image attachments or containing links).

How this works is that once enabled a copy is sent through your lightphone account to their servers and in turn emailed on to you.

This is handy because with no brower a long ass link is hard to deal with on a dumb phone.

  30. @btp DANG it looks so good. The dial for screen brightness and flashlight, the dedicated two-level shutter button (also opens the camera tool), the UI, it's just great.
But it also has 6GB of RAM (not sure why that much), no headphone jack, no [micro]SD -card slot, and is made in China (despite the high-ish price). If it were open-source, though, I would probably buy it anyway right now. #LightPhone #LightPhone3

  33. I've been rocking this LP3 exclusively for almost a week now. I have some thoughts:
    1) yes, getting rid of my smart phone was the right decision. I am happier to be in the moment, I can watch a movie without being distracted etc.
    2) The biggest losses for me are
    a) facetime/imessage (my son can no longer call me from his ipad)
    b) online banking and zelle
