I've talked about how winter can be a great time to photograph various ducks in the winter at the Spit. Birds come to the ponds for the free-flowing water and shelter from winds. As winter proceeds, the ice starts to form on the pond, brining the birds closer and closer to the photographers who are game to sit on snowy/icy little beaches near the bridge, which stays clear of ice at the bridge because of water flow.

One snowy day at the Spit.

This was possible drama unfolding. A mink had appeared next to me, ran across a frozen pond, TOWARDS possible death. That is a snowy owl atop the heap of rubble. At its base we can see the mink in the snow. The owl was facing right, it seemed to pay no attention to the mink. The mink disappeared into the rubble, possibly a den. It's possible the owl had recently eaten, so was just basking in the sun, uninterested in more food.
