The Leonid meteor shower is known for producing some of the most amazing meteor displays in the annals of astronomy, and it’ll be reaching its maximum soon. Read more from @Spacecom:

"While my colleagues are off observing the 🌠 #Leonids meteor shower, I have remained behind to complete my paper. Although my research is going well, I do miss the warmth of human companionship."
The peak is expected to be around 16-17 November 2025

Found rather raw material which AP TV shot in our #Leonids desert camp in #Jordan during the #meteor storm 25 years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HB0wGv320Vg and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKwo18IaLzw - it includes image-intensified footage and a soundbite by Georg Dittié who described the experience in https://www.meteoros.de/fileadmin/user_upload/mitteilungsblatt/meteoros_public/Meteoros_2000_02.pdf (PDF pages 14-18, in German).

25 years ago tonight the #Leonids produced the first #meteor storm since 33 years - and I could witness it in the desert in #Jordan, together with the very theorists who had correctly predicted its occurrence plus the time (but underestimated its strength by a factor ~10): http://web.archive.org/web/20130517170355/http://www.astro.uni-bonn.de/~dfischer/leo99/story.html = my report (comes with links to picture pages), https://skyweek.lima-city.de/Leoniden1999outcome.html = an interview with said theorists afterwards, https://skyweek.wordpress.com/2024/11/06/allgemeines-live-blog-ab-dem-6-november-2024/#Nov18 = more links about the 1999 Leonids storm.

Sat 10-15 minutes in the yard looking for the Leonid meteor shower. Moonlight and drifting cloud tatters made for poor observation conditions. But I did manage to see one meteor.

Today's peachy #moonrise from Portobello, Edinburgh 🏴 I'm a big fan of the (almost) full moon, but its stunning brightness is going to make it extra difficult to spot the #leonids meteor shower which peaks overnight 🤔😠 If you're out walking the dog #dolookup 🔭🌠🧪 ℹ️: www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topi...

It would be hard to observe in any case with the Moon practically full ... but there is a chance for an interesting outburst of faint #Leonids meteors today (14 November) around 16:37 UTC: see https://www.imo.net/update-regarding-2024-leonid-outbursts-prediction/ for an (old but still valid) alert and https://skyweek.wordpress.com/2024/11/06/allgemeines-live-blog-ab-dem-6-november-2024/#Nov14 for context and related links.

"Skywatchers, get ready to witness some celestial activity as the Leonids and Northern Taurids meteor showers peak in mid-November."
From @USAToday: "The Leonid meteor shower is caused by space debris from Comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle, which collides with Earth's atmosphere. Two independent discoveries of the comet were made by Ernst Tempel in 1865 and Horace Tuttle in 1866, according to NASA."

Now that I found a good spot for #astrophotography I marked both the upcoming #Leonids and #Orionids peaks in my calendar.

The #Leonids #MeteorShower is peaking this weekend.
Info:
- best viewing is after midnight local time, away from artificial lights🌠
- meteors may appear to originate in the East from the area around the constellation Leo but can appear anywhere in the sky, laying back and looking at the whole sky is good 🧭
- staying dark adapted is key, so stay off your cell phone 📵
⛈️Rainy/cloudy? Your next meteor shower is the Geminids in December so it's almost there.

I have the Subaru Telescope meteor webcam on my living room screen. It’s Leonid meteor shower time. I’ve only seen one in the last 30 minutes. I may have missed some. I’m not watching it continuously.

In 2023, the famous Leonid meteor shower will be free of moonlight on the shower’s peak morning, November 18. You might also try watching on the morning of November 17.

Hey #chicago people,
Any favorite #stargazing spots in the area? Looks like the weather might be clear enough to watch the #leonids tonight, provided we can get away from the light pollution…

25 years ago tonight I witnessed an amazing rain of #fireballs from the #Leonids over #Mongolia: in https://geocities.restorativland.org/CapeCanaveral/5599/leo98/trip.html I reported with (too small) pictures about the amazing experience and trip; https://www.facebook.com/groups/788806561196660/posts/6716473001763290/ has some more links, and https://skyweek.lima-city.de/FiveWildYears.html puts it all into context.
