English dominates global communication today, but does that make it fair?
The core vision behind Esperanto and the UEA is that global communication should be built on fairness, neutrality, and mutual respect—not linguistic dominance.
Is convenience worth the sacrifice of linguistic equality? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Look at the data from the Spring Institute and Paderborn experiments: children who studied Esperanto for 2 years and then French for 3 years spoke better French than those who studied French for all 5 years.
It's the ultimate linguistic onboarding ramp. 🏎️

Ever download a language app, quit after two weeks, and think, "Maybe I just don't have a natural talent for languages"?
There’s no such thing as not being a “natural language learner.”
You don’t lack talent. You’re just forcing yourself into a method that fights against how your brain naturally absorbs information.
Find the right system for your learning style, and everything changes.

Lean into how your brain naturally learns.

Memorize grammar rules. Drill conjugations. Take a test. Forget everything 3 weeks later.
It’s the traditional approach most of us grew up with, and it’s exactly why you feel stuck. Our brains didn’t evolve to learn language through explicit instruction. They evolved to learn through immersion and context. If you want true fluency, you have to flip the script and prioritize input over rules.

When picking a language, think about the ceiling. After 1,500 hours of Esperanto, you’ve more or less mastered it. With Spanish, it’s endless. After 3,000 hours, you’re still discovering regional phrases and cultural nuances.

Before choosing a language, know what keeps you consistent! Esperanto offers a tight-knit community vibe with instant group connections. Spanish, on the other hand, unlocks 20+ countries and 500 million speakers but demands personal effort to connect. Pick what fits your style!

Think you don’t have time to learn 2 languages? Consider this: Scenario A: Spanish fluency takes 1,500-2,500 hours. Scenario B: Esperanto + Spanish = 600-800 hrs + 1,200-1,500 hrs. Same time, but you get 2 languages! Which investment makes more sense for your brain?

It's hard to stick with language learning if you don't enjoy doing it.

Learning a language like Esperanto first can allow you to experience the benefits of bilingualism sooner rather than later. This creates momentum that will carry you into every language you learn afterwards.

Spanish evolved naturally over centuries, accumulating irregularities and exceptions like barnacles on a ship. It’s culturally beautiful, but linguistically messy (looking at you, arbitrary gendered nouns and the subjunctive mood).
Esperanto, by contrast, is clean. All nouns end in -o. All adjectives end in -a. Every single verb follows the exact same conjugation pattern.
Do you want to wrestle with exceptions, or do you want to start communicating fast?
-
You don't need to know as many words as you might think in order to be fluent.

Most language content focuses on the wrong specs: "How hard is it? How long will it take?"
The uncomfortable truth? Motivation is the hardest part, not the grammar. You could have the easiest language in the world in front of you, but if you don’t have a compelling reason to show up every single day, you’ll quit.
Don't ask which language is harder. Ask which language is worth the effort for you.

Stop trying to do sporadic, multi-hour cramming sessions. Your brain consolidates language through regular, repeated exposure.
Try this 30-minute daily framework instead:
10 Mins: Graded audio content (low pressure comprehension).
15 Mins: Active shadowing (replaying and speaking along with native speakers).
5 Mins: Review (listening one final time without speaking to notice how much more you catch).
Consistency beats intensity every single time. 📈
-
Quick tip for intermediate language learners struggling to transition to native content:
Stop abandoning native podcasts just because they speak too fast. Instead, use modern technology to your advantage. Drop the speed control to 0.75x or 0.9x.
It keeps you squarely in the "comprehensible input" zone without forcing you to retreat to boring, artificial learner materials. As your ear adjusts, bump it back up to 1.0x. Simple, tactical, effective.

Ever freeze when speaking a language you understand? ❄️ You're not broken! You're just stuck in listening mode. To boost your speaking skills, transform that comprehension into action. Try daily shadowing, dictation, and summarizing aloud. Remember, input needs output!

Did you know your brain learns languages through pattern matching, not grammar drills? It tracks sounds and word probabilities like a supercomputer!

You're welcome to use both, but don't mistake one for the other.

Not seeing progress in your language? Rethink your listening style! Passive Listening: Just background noise. Active Listening: Full focus on native shows/subs, slowing audio, or dictation. Combine both for best results. Use passive as a sidekick and focus on active sessions!

🎧 Can you get fluent just by listening? Yes, but passive listening keeps you stuck. Real growth happens with active habits like shadowing.
In my new article, I break down the science + 3 daily study plans.

Kids may absorb languages easily, but adults have key advantages: better pattern recognition, richer life experiences for context, and the discipline to maintain learning habits. Don't underestimate your ability to learn just because you're not a kid! Your brain is a powerhouse!

You don't need marathon study sessions while traveling to keep your language sharp. Capitalize on micro-learning. Spend 5 to 15 minutes reviewing phrases while waiting for a flight, sitting at a cafe, or riding transit. Consistency over intensity keeps the language top-of-mind without cutting into your sightseeing. #languagelearning #travel #languageandtravel #traveltheworld #learnlanguages
-
In emergencies, stress clouds your thinking and translation apps can fail you. Before you leave home, memorize essential safety phrases like "I need medical help" or "Where is the nearest pharmacy?" Better yet, write them phonetically on a physical card and carry it separately from your phone. Clarity beats perfect grammar when you need help fast. #languagelearning #travel #languageandtravel #traveltheworld #learnlanguages
-
Aiming for fluency before travel is overkill unless you plan on being there for a while. #languagelearning #travel #languageandtravel #traveltheworld #learnlanguages

If you're prepping for a trip, time is your scarcest resource. Don't cram the night before your flight. Use a Spaced Repetition System (SRS) like Anki. By showing you travel-vetted words right before your brain is about to forget them, you can build a highly effective core vocabulary of high-frequency words in just a few weeks. #languagelearning #travel #languageandtravel #traveltheworld #learnlanguages

A few basic phrases go a long way. #languagelearning #travel #languageandtravel #traveltheworld #learnlanguages

Want to unlock the best recommendations and find hidden gems tourists never see? It’s not about having a flawless accent. It’s about effort. A simple, polite formula like "I'm learning your language, thank you for your patience" opens incredible doors. #languagelearning #travel #languageandtravel #traveltheworld #learnlanguages
-
The biggest mistake travelers make? Trying to learn everything before they go. Instead, try itinerary-driven preparation. Map out your trip step-by-step. Navigating an airport? Learning airport phrases is priority one. Checking into a hotel? Build a script for that. #languagelearning #travel #languageandtravel #traveltheworld #learnlanguages
-
When it comes to travelling, don't try to learn everything about a language. Focus only on what you need to know. #languagelearning #travel #languageandtravel #traveltheworld #learnlanguages
-
You don’t need to be fluent to travel confidently. Drop the generic language apps that force you through months of grammar before you can even order a coffee. For travel, aim for phrase-based competence. You just need to handle food, transport, directions, and basic emergencies. #languagelearning #travel #languageandtravel #traveltheworld #learnlanguages

The English word cow is related to other Germanic words: Icelandic kýr and Swedish ko. These words are also connected to a surprising group of words across other Indo‑European branches thought to derive from a common Proto‑Indo‑European root, *gʷṓws, for example Irish bó, Latvian govs, and Armenian կով (kov).

Learning foreign languages is one of my hobbies (which I tend to far to seldom, due to time restrictions, unfortunately).
But, #TIL that there is a 🇪🇺 European Day of Languages (which actually exists since 2001), and it's actually today. I also learned that I am one of 3 out of 5 Europeans who can speak a foreign language besides their native language. Furthermore, I actually know 5 out of the 24 official European languages which is actually a fifth of all European languages 🤯
Of course I don't speak all of them fluently (in fact it's only my native language (German) and English I feel really comfortable with). But non the less interesting to know and somewhat motivating to sharpen the other three, as well.
How many languages do my followers (or anyone stumbling upon this post) speak? How many would you like to speak? What was the last language you learned, or what is the language you are currently learning, or the next one you are planning to learn? And why not start today, at the "Day of Languages"?
Whatever you do today: 🇩🇪 Habt noch einen schönen Tag! 🇫🇷 Bonne journée! 🇪🇸 ¡Que tengas un buen día! 🇳🇴 Ha en god dag!
And if you haven't understood any of those: 🇬🇧 Have a nice day!

Day 107 of learning #Japanese and thanks to Tokyo Ghoul I’ve become obsessed with this word, pronounced as ‘gaman’. It reminds me of the word ‘tahan’ in Bahasa Melayu (spoken in Malaysia) which pretty much means the same thing: to tolerate, to endure, to put up with something.
