  3. After a routine Bitbucket upgrade a year ago, I was met with the "Welcome to Bitbucket" setup page. "I just wiped an entire codebase 😳", I thought. Turns out the IP of the NFS server (where Bitbucket data lives) in DNS was updated, so Bitbucket saw no data and thought it was a fresh install. Once I corrected the IP, all was well. Fun times 😅

  13. Closing the year with some migrations. Ive been tasked with migrating and containerizing our Atlassian Tools (Bitbucket, Confluence and Jira ). All done with Confluence and Bitbucket. Jira in a few more days. I’ve learned A LOT over these past few weeks, but I’m so ready for this project to be finished so I can relax a bit, and enjoy the holidays with the fam!

  16. Some advice from a senior engineer that stuck with me, recently:

  18. Some concepts come easy. Some take time. But that "aha" moment? Worth it every time.
For me, recently, this was understanding TLS termination. What was your recent "aha" moment?

  19. You sure "rsync -av" keeps files in sync? It only compares the file's size and timestamp. If content changes without either updating, it's skipped. The "--checksum" flag is the real truth-teller.

  21. To all the "Getting Into DevOps" tutorials that don't have any modules on Networking ..shame on you. Networking is such an important foundation that gets skimmed over, or completely skipped, in a lot of tutorials.

  22. A year ago I couldn’t tell you what a PVC or ingress was. Today I’m recovering from broken clusters, migrating core services, and — most importantly — actually feeling confident. 🚀

  23. - Stumbled upon mailgun, and am now using their free tier for my SMTP needs. Which aren't much.
    - Deployed Komodo to monitor my docker containers.

  24. - Moved PiHole and Infisical (Secrets Manager) to external VMs outside of my K8s cluster. Not sure why I didn't do this when I initially built my cluster 🤷🏾‍♂️ . So what happened? #DevOps #learnk8s #100DaysOfCode #100DaysOfDevOps #homelab #kubernetes

  25. - Fully migrated my K8s stack to RKE2. Having my apps "GItOps"ed made the process less painful then what it could've been.

  26. Just added monitoring to my home lab using the VictoriaMetrics K8s Stack! 🚀 It was a bit tricky since the VictoriaMetrics chart installs multiple components, and I had to wrap my head around what each one does.
    Lesson Learned :
    - Read the docs 😅

  28. I was productive yesterday - I spun up my first kubernetes cluster on my three node Proxmox cluster. The controller and 3x worker nodes are Rocky LXC containers.

The problem I'm attempting to solve is this monolithic beast of a docker host VM - it's running 12 containers and is struggling. I'm hoping to move to kubes to

    1. Learn kubes
    2. Distribute the workload across multiple physical hosts
    3. Limiting impact when one container hits high CPU/memory consumption

So far, I've successfully installed nginx ingress with cert-manager doing Let's Encrypt with cloud flare DNS proofs and direct container NFS mounts. I still need to figure out when/how to use persistent volumes/claims vs direct NFS mounts inside the container, and frankly I don't really grok labels/selectors/namespaces stuff.
