i've been lurking for a while on another server, but it's time to make my home here.
So here's my #introduction post. My handle is @vitskapsdama, which means the Science Lady in Norwegian. I'm a medical writer and #science educator, and have worked for a non-profit youth organisation.
I'm born in #Indonesia, grew up in the #Netherlands and moved in the early 2000s with my family to a small village in #Norway.
I'm interested in Life, the Universe and Everything, love to explore what comes my way and am a lifelong #learner. I love learning by doing and am an #arts and #crafts person.
I try to lead a #sustainable life and to minimize my #footprint, but modern society does not make that easy. So I like to learn from others and maybe share what works for me.
My main hobbies are #cooking and eating #food, #fiberarts like #crochet and #embroidery, #origami #handwriting, #postcrossing, #notebooks and #fountainpens.
I love #books and #libraries, and I mainly read for enjoyment. My favorite genres are old-school #fantasy and #sciencefiction. I also play #games when I have the time.
I post a daily picture of my life over at pixelfed.social (just look up my handle there). I'm not sorry at all for the long post and love to connect with interesting and open-minded people.

This report (which crops up every few months) is often used to spin #EV adoption, but the reality is its the #driving schools that are buying EVs for their fleets - most of the young #learner #drivers who choose #automatic #cars are picking #petrol / #diesel vehicles when they pass their test , the main reason folk are increasingly choosing automatic 'boxes in #UK is the stress of learning to drive and sheer weight of traffic (I've driven in #Swindon and it has an abundance of #roundabouts, where driving manual can be a chore).
There *isn't* at present much of "green dividend" as is often claimed (although it must reduce emissions from driving school cars, and used Renault Zoe and Nissan Leaf are now reaching "first car" price points)

I'm helping out my nephew, who lives elsewhere. He wants to learn Python, but I'm drawing a blank on good resources. Dive into Python is more for experienced programmers. Learn Python the Hard Way costs money now (dammit). Raspberry Pi Foundation materials are a little below him. What else is out there, pls?

I was #educated in the 70’s but I am a lifelong #learner.
One thing I’ve noticed is that in much of #science and #history that was taught all the way into #college was incorrect or misrepresented. Plate tectonics was strictly a “#theory”, as evolution and genetics were presented. Erich Von Däniken was taken nearly as seriously as Carl Sagan.
#Wikipedia later generated a lot of #fear. We were #warned against using it.

I have been inspired enough to hunt online - and discovered that our local council actually ran free courses for adult beginners - however they have had to stop because there was too much demand. You can add your name to a waiting list, and, I guess, wait. However it does not say how long for. And the word "stop" seems pretty final. -
