#Kmscon soll bald Altlasten von #Linux rund um reine Textkonsolen den Garaus machen, um Sicherheit zu verbessern und Funktionsumfang zu erweitern (und dabei auch ein altes, viel geliebtes Feature zurückbringen).

Der Ansatz war für #Fedora 44 vorgesehen, der Wechsel wurde aber auf das für Oktober geplante 45 vertagt.

Nachdem ich schon eine schnelle Meldung für den Newsticker von @heiseonline geschrieben habe, habe ich das Ganze jetzt nochmal etwas detaillierter und präziser beschrieben (und dabei auch DRM und Fbdev/Fbcon etwas näher beschrieben, da mir mehr Platz eingeräumt wurde).

Schon erstaunlich, wie viele meiner Formulierungen aus dem #Kmscon-Heise-Text von gestern[1] sich in einem anderen und deutlich längeren Text aus anderem Haus wiedereinfinden[2]; und dass von mir unerwähnte Details (wie Multiseat-Support) dort auch nicht erwähnt werden.

Frage mich, ob und ggf. wie viel KI da im Spiel war – oder ob meine Wahrnehmung sich täuscht.

Das gilt ähnlich für einen anderen Text[3], der allerdings knapper ist.

Side note & fun fact: Ich hatte Kritik für das "epochal" in meiner Überschrift erwartet. Die ist aber ausgeblieben – und [2] haut mit "Revolution" sogar noch mehr auf die Kacke.

Anyone know if the new #kmscon works better with GDB-tui than #KDE konsole? Sadly, #Debian does not yet package kmscon. You're right, that's a problem I myself could solve.

Ich würde gern eine neue Konsole nutzen, die besser GDB-tui unterstuzt. Wisst jemand ob #kmscon funktioniert mit GDB besser? Leider bietet Debian kmscon bisher nicht an. Ja, konnte ich selbst diese Anwendung verpacken . . .

Okay, not AMD drivers, it now affects my laptop too.

If I have #KMScon enabled or #SDDM running I can't launch Hyprland, `/dev/dri/card1` is busy with sddm/kmscon and it bails.

Is there a new group I need to add my user to? Has this changed somewhere in #nixos?

#Fedora is currently discussing a proposal to replace the #kernel console #fbcon with the userspace console #kmscon in its next version, "to provide an enhanced and more secure console.

The long term goal is also to deprecate fbcon/fbdev emulation in the kernel, and this is the first step in this direction.""

Anyone got a clue why this looks so bad? NixOs config responsible for it up thread (well in a sister thread for where I fixed it). This is on an old optiplex on a 3440*1440 screen.

Is it a bad choice of font? There isn't much guidance on what fonts are likely to work well.

Just submitted my talk-proposal for @fosdem 2024 about patching #kmscon and using OpenGL for systems-programming ;) My last FOSDEM-talk is from 2007... was called "Bling it up"... 16 years ago... uff :) Let's hope it'll be accepted.

I just upgraded tty1 to #kmscon using the kmscon-service in #guix and this is so nice that if I didn't have to do vfx work for money I'd probably be ditching a display server altogether

That's basically the idea, yes. If you've heard of #fbterm or the old #kmscon that used to be part of #systemd (but was quietly removed from it several years ago, with far less fanfare than when it was originally added) it's the same sort of idea, but structured significantly differently to and more flexibly than those two.
